Trouble with pyramid honing on Norton 4K/8k

Hey everyone,
As I've posted recently, I've been working on setting a bevel on a vintage ja henckles using a Norton 1k. After many days and hours, I feel I finally got a feel for it. Started with circles/x stroke sets and then decided to stick with x strokes only. Did 140 x stroke laps in sets of ten starting with firm pressure and gradually easing up to no pressure and got the razor to shave off leg hair quite easily, so I figured I had the bevel was finally set and moved on to pyramid honing.
I did 25 on the Norton 4K/8k, dropped to 20/20, then 15/15, 10/10, 5/5, 3/3, 1/3, 1/5. I'm not sure if it's shave ready or not but it won't cut cut the tops off leg hair, it Only cuts if I run it along the skin like it did after the bevel was set. It also failed the hanging hair test. If it turns out to not be in shave ready condition, how should I go about continuing the honing to make it complete?

Have you stropped the razor? Stropping has a big influence on how an edge cuts hair - either hair that's still attached to your arms or hand-held HHT test hairs.

Sounds like you are trying to set the bevel on the 4k.

Set the bevel, fully on the 1k. Look at the edge with magnification, straight down. Once there are no shiny reflections, the bevel is fully set. Then just remove the 1k stria with the 4k and the 4k with the 8k.

If you continue to go back and forth between grits without knowing if the bevel is fully set, you are in effect honing blind.

You first must make an edge, then, simply polish and straighten it.

Have you stropped and shaved with it?, maybe your test aren't conclusive. Tc

Did not strop. I just shaved with it. Runs over the beard but removes very little to no hair. Very aggravating. I used the pyramid honing but guess it didn't work. What can I do to make it sharp?

I would strop, then give it a whirl, but it's looking more like it ain't bevel set all the way,, try the strop then start again,, But then again Glen, Ron, or Marty will have a better idea than me, or Oz , but I always strop before test shave, Tc
