Razor Advice
My name's Warren and I'm a recovering electric shaver.
Well, really, I shaved with a straight once upon a time, and I've got two old Henckels carbon steel razors that just bubbled to the surface. One's a 4/8 and the other's a 5/8. The 4/8 has pretty heavy hone wear on the spine, the 5/8 isn't bad. Both are pretty ugly: I don't think there's "active rust" on them, but they're not a bit shiny. The 4/8 cleaned up fairly well with Maas and a Dremel, the 5/8 didn't get much better with the same treatment and I dinged the edge with the felt wheel.
I'm trying to decide whether to have a honemeister put an edge on these or just buy a shave-ready newbie razor. There's no sentimental attachment to the ones I have, but the 5/8 might turn out to be a pretty good shaver. I think my primary objective is to keep the cost down for the time being.
Any advice?
Regards,
Warren

Sounds like two good razors to practice on. You can find a good 'shave ready' from several folks here. Get one 'ready to go' so you can evaluate if you like it and where you want to go from here.

Welome, Warren
Hi Warren,
I like Firebox' idea too. Later you can get somebody to clean them up if you like.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like good advice. I'll keep an eye open for something to start with.
