I regret walking away from a few blades in the wild. I recall one of my first adventures at an antique store passing on a large FR because I thought the blade face was too scratched up. Another I walked away from was a C.V. Heljestrand because it had too much rust, but was only $8. Passed on a few real nice vintage strops cause I thought they were overpriced.
I regret buying a Sigma Power select 2, 1k. Hate that stone.
I can relate to that. One time at an antiques market I walked away from a nice big Joseph Elliot wedge that I thought was overpriced because of cracked scales at the pivot. I got about 50 paces away, changed my mind and returned to the table. It was being sold to someone else. It's the one's that got away that will haunt you.Quote:

I'm going to join the "I wish I would have started sooner," herd. In my case I took up the soap and brush roughly ten years ago and was intrigued by the idea of using a straight razor but I didn't know anything about them. Truth be told, I found the learning curve far too intimidating and I didn't even think to check out the internet for more information.
I guess you can say that I regret not typing "straight razors" into Google...maybe I would have found SRP and a better shave far sooner!:gaah:

I regret being introduced to gold washed blades before I knew how to treat them.
I also regret, in the beginning, thinking because I could freehand sharpen knives I could sharpen razors.
This site, and the GTG's and mentors here in gave me the appreciation for those regrets.
The consensus seems to be noone really has any regrets.
We can chalk-up our failures as we wish to. Learning from mistakes does not come easily in this endeavor.
Something gone South has been experienced by all of us.

A while back I had a good amount of money saved and was tossing up between the gok 20k or a Neil Miller shell strop. I got the gok and unfortunately never got the chance to get a Miller strop. Definitely a regret.
I regret selling a few razors although the regret doesn't last to long as it's often replaced by the thought of something special is just waiting around the corner with my name on it.
I really regret selling this beautiful Dovo 7/8. I have not found one since.

I regret putting off buying a Neil Miller made strop when he was still with us. I've never heard a bad thing about his craftsmanship.

My only regret is not having the knowledge I have now when my boys were growing up.
Have 6 grandsons so far, and enough razors to last several generations. I am going to teach them correct shaving and grooming procedures, none of which will involve a muck 3 or any canned goo.
I regret that my grandfather's straights were disposed of at his death. Some baseless fear that I, as a ten year old might hurt myself or someone else. Silly idea, I think. I finally bought a new production straight from PRC a few months ago and couldn't be happier. It is in getting honed and new fancy scales. At the age of 70, I fear that the RAD is coming on me. My wife is sort of understanding. Pray she stays that way.

I wish I had started lapping with my Norton stone. Or at least paid better attention when I was doing so. I had just spent an unholy amount of time on a rather hard Chinese stone, and in my zeal to quickly lap the Norton washed half of the 4k side down the drain before I realized how soft it was in comparison. That was a fairly pricey mistake, those single grit replacement hones hurt the ol' wallet a bit and came far sooner than they should have.
I guess we can add that Gold Dollar 'practice razor' to the list. I meant to use it for honing practice, but every time I turned around I was dropping my Dovo, rolling the edge on a strop, or otherwise boning something up so most of my practice was done on it anyway.
Boiling the linen part of my Illinois strop wasn't such a hot idea either. I only meant to heat it up some while cleaning. Put it in a pot of water, set it on the stove. Made a mental note not to get distracted, then 30 minutes later it was FUBAR'd. Well, the linen still works but the handle is all shrunken and gnarly.
Glad I made that mistake with a cheap strop and not my nicer SRD strop.
Buying this dd goldedge. From the pics the scales look in good condition the gold plate is almost all there, but my regret was I did not notice the end of the blade. It looks to have been dropped and had an attempt at repair by a previous owner.

Wish I would have noticed that. Lesson learned the hard way. But at least I have a good set of scales for a goldedge if I happen to come across a good blade that needs scales. Can't complain much for $30. Too much of a pain to return it. I guess now I have a goldedge dwarf.
Betcha it shaves good!
I'll hone it this weekend and give it a test run. If I do it now I might end up with a goldedge nub. I've found it's best to hone in a good mood.
I have no ragrets since being here, so I got this bad ass tattoo.

I personally regret not having somebody locally to talk to about it. That would have been so helpful. But this forum is incredibly valuable!

I regret not having started 15 years ago when all the good choppers were just cheeeaaaaapppp!!!! and also regret all the razors i bought in my first few months.. in ebay .... i should have known better.... i should have listened the folks in the SRP char in IRC...
I would say after more than a year since started on SRs.. and a few thousands of dollars later, i regret starting because of the impact to my pocket... but i really don't.. yet... :P
