Went from paranoid to cocky after only 1 shave.
Got too comfortable, and the speedy shaver in me came out.
Started going over spots to clean up without lather. Well that's one way to see what happens lol.

slow down you have a 100 or so shaves ahead of you to really get comfortable,, plus we already know the edge on your razor may be suspect,,, try just doing your cheeks for a week or 2 and get really good at that before taking on another section "ONE" at a time then put them all together when your really good at it, with a shave ready razor,,, practice the stropping its really the most important part,, finish with your regular razor Tc
I have two spots, one on each side of my adam's apple that I'll do light buffing strokes without lather BUT that will depend on the soap I'm using. I'll do it if the soap has good residual slickness, if not I'll re-lather. Check out Obies first tier soap thread for good descriptions of soap qualities.
Nothing brings on nicks and blood moreso than cockiness and speed. It's a bad combo from my experience. And, this is even after the 100 shaves. :)
Cuts happen. At least you know now it isn't all that bad and nothing like you have seen on TV or read about in fiction.
My first cut actually relaxed me a lot.
That's kind of how I felt.
It was like, okay now that's out of the way.
It was weird too, because it was 2 almost perfectly symmetrical cuts. One on each corner of my chin. Almost perfectly symmetrical, right down to the length of the cuts. About a half inch.
But yeah, even though I got them from being stupid, I was almost glad to just get them out of the way.

You must not be shaving your chin/mustache area I presume? If so, you are taking to the straight razor freakishly fast. If not, try shaving those areas and see how you fare. The "fool's pass" and chin really up the challenge of straight razor shaving. If I wasn't shaving those areas of my face, I would probably be more than little bored by now. ;)
I think if I slow down, and stop trying to be the bull in the china shop things will be fine.
Time will tell, but I think I am going to be addicted to this.

The cuts were on the corners of the chin, close to the jawline, and I didn't get cut on the first pass when the lather was on it. It was as I tried to clean up bits and pieces missed on the first try. The cuts were almost identical in size, placement, and angle on each corner of the chin. I think I almost cut myself in the same place the 1st shave.
I was surprised I got that far as well, which is why I got cocky, maybe.
I think it's partly because I don't have a real heavy beard why I'm getting a little farther. I have been extremely careful since the beginning about trying to have a very small angle, and no pressure as well.
That reminds me of my attitude. Some say aren't you afraid of getting cut chafing with those. No I am not afraid of getting cut. It happens. Then people say that's terrible you should shave with a multi blade so you won't get cut. Truth is I have gotten my worst cut with a multi blade. My response is usually have you ever cut yourself with a kitchen knife? We all know the answer. Well did you through out all your kitchen knives and go to a slap chop. We know the answer to that too. It is a wee bit more dangerous but well worth it when you have that close, clean and comfortable shave, day after day.
I knew something happened because the blade kind of stopped in a way I didn't like, but it took a minute to feel it. Meanwhile even now, and a minute after, I felt it.. and didn't love it. It really electrified me when I splashed some water on it as well Those things seem like a scapel to me, as far as sharpness.
At the end of the day though, I've cut myself worse on cartridges (not as long typically but a worse bite) and as thin as the cuts are with the straight, it seems like it will heal quickly? Idk. The cuts seemed much finer, and the scabbing very thin. I've even had a few cuts from what was at the time sold as a high quality electric razor.
Happens to all of us. It will get better of course. Make sure you have lots of time so you will never feel rushed. Lock the bathroom door. Reason: It seems that when I'm shaving, that's the time my wife decides she needs to ask me something.:rofl2:
Mike
Over time, if you are anything like me, you learn to stop abruptly once you feel the pain of a cut, so they rarely go all that deep. After a few days, they heal up fine with no scarring.
I agree that multi-blades are far worse with cutting, not to mention the frequent in-grown hairs and overall skin irritation. No thanks! I don't even own a single DE. It's too scary to use a fancy scraper for shaving.
This is my biggest problem. It's all on me, but I'm not giving myself enough time. I'm used to shaving right before work, and would knock it out in about 2 1/2 minutes all included.
I didn't enjoy shaving with cartridges, and just went as fast as possible. I really do enjoy trying to use the straight though, and think I will love it when I get some good muscle memory in the hands. Using the brush, everything. So cool.
But I need to rearrange my morning for sure. I made myself rushed today, but I still wanted to do it, so I did.
I feel like that definitely contributed to getting cut.
Today I shaved with excellent Japanese razor and at the very last second I was badly cut. Just decided to spend one more time on the cheek, without lather.
Sometimes I want to stop shaving with straight razors, because I'm afraid that eventually the entire face will be in scars. I ask myself, why do I need this ??
Cut of the Day
Guys, you know we love pics. This thread is for you.

Well cuts and weepers will happen.
But glad to hear you did so well
It does take some time, so yeah you'll have to rearrange your morning. But many of us consider it spoiling ourselves. It is like meditation to me. Even though I have an 8 month old in the bathroom with me every morning. And a 3 year old coming in and out. But I've learned to "ignore" the minor distractions. They enjoy watching me shave.
But if you can, make this your time. Things get better and better with each shave
Enjoy and have fun
TC and others have given you sound counsel! You seem to understand that they are trying to help you and you also seem to admit a few of the faults of your first shave ( rushing, trying to shave all areas) all of which I find very commendable!
Now--Just implement those little bits of corrective criticism and acknowledge your mistakes and start Fresh!!! Just the Sideburns To Jawline for a couple of week (at least) so that you will get comfortable with the art. Then move down to under the jawline for a few weeks after shaving the sideburns to jawline and last and I mean dead last work on the moustach and chin.
Go Slow, Learn as you go and you'll soon be bragging on how much you not only enjoy using a straight razor, but what great shaves you get! :tu
Sounds like things are going well!
When I started I heeded the warnings to start with my cheeks before moving onto my neck, advice that I think helped start me off on the right foot. Thankfully I don't worry about the "Fools Pass" because that area remains unshaven. The other thing I did that I think helped me was to rearrange my shaving routine for a time. In the beginning, in order to avoid rushing, I switched to an evening shave routine. For a couple of months I would shower and shave before bed and rely on the closer shave with the straight to see me through the afternoon. This adaptation allowed me to have plenty of time to figure out what I was doing with the razor without worrying about making it to work on time.
Now I get up early to shave but my routine is pretty consistent and predictable. I, like you, used to dislike shaving and now it is one of the highlights of my day. I happily get up before 5:00 in order to enjoy my morning and the shave that goes along with it. To be fair, I'm an early riser by nature and most of my adult life I've been in the position of having to be up at 4:00 or even earlier, 5:00 is a bit like sleeping in for me.
there you go , Green ripper is in your area,, hes been here a few months. by the way what part of town are you in? I get up that way a lot,, was my home for 40 years (Ballwin, Ellisville,) or as Greenripper said to me Lafayette High! Tc
It's really, to be specific, a St. Louis thing as the transplants from elsewhere in the state don't understand it either. Mostly it was the local version of "What neighborhood did you grow up in?" By hearing which school you attended the locals can usually deduce your socioeconomic background. This is a 'tradition' that seems to be fading a bit with those of us who are younger but some of us still default to it at times. When Tc first introduced himself to me I, jokingly, accused him of not being a native because he asked me what part of the area I was from instead of the using the local phrasing.
St. Charles, eh? I'm up that way a bit as one of my closest friends is no more than a stone's throw from you. I'm a Northwest grad (Northern Jeff Co) who has returned to his old stomping grounds so while I'm about 40 minutes south of you I'd be more than happy to help you out however I can. Currently I'm on summer break so time my time tends to be relatively plentiful but I'm headed out-of-town for a few days to visit family. PM me and I can find some time to get together with you and give you what little assistance I can provide. I even have a few pieces of kit I'm willing to PIF if you are in need or wanting to try something different.
Yeah, I moved here from CO when I was 16, and I'm 46 now, so it was going on then.
Whatever works easiest for you. If something came up, and you find yourself heading this way, I might meet up after you finish up, or I can always hit the road to meet in the middle.
It seems like I'm going to be buying things for a while, since I'm literally at the very beginning of this.
So yeah, if there's something you don't use anymore, I'm sure it would be a welcome addition.
