selecting a starter set

Hello, all. I've been lurking these forums for a few weeks researching for my first purchase. I have come to these choices for a beginner like me:

- DOVO 5/8 Complete Straight Razor set w/ Heirloom Paddle Strop

- "Classic Black" Straight Razor Set (with added "Pre-Honed Razor Option")

Both of these sets are about $160 when worked out with shipping and the pre-honed option for the set at Vintage Blades. I'm really having a hard time selecting between the two.
How should the inequities in each package dictate my choice? Better strop/pre-paste with WSG package? Better brush with Vintage? Better razor with Vintage? Styptic pencil? etc.

Will someone enlighten me as to which set will be better for this new straight razor user? I look forward to hearing back from you.

Welcome to the forum. Both vendors are outstanding in their products and service. I like the option with the pasted paddle so you can touch up your edg. You won't go wrong with either though.

The razors in each package are both nearly equal. The brush from Vintage is superior, as is the mug and soap, but the strop is probably not as good as one of Tony's though still a very good strop.

I like a hanging strop for everyday use, so would probably go for that, and add a finishing hone for touch-ups later. Of course Tony offers the same set with one of his hangers. I've never been that much into paddle strops or pastes though.

I think the best way to go is really pick just based on what you want in a razor and a strop. All the other stuff is nice but not as crucial. Therefore it makes great presents for other people to get you down the road. Neither of the sets offers the coolest mug option ( a Moss scuttle), the best soaps, or the ultimate in brushes.
