Hi Paul
I could be interested in this. It would however depend on three things; 1)when, 2)where and 3) what would we be doing? I mean i've never been to any such meet before (if there has been such a thing before) so dont know what it would entail.
Let me know what you were thinking of and when.
Sandy
At this moment I'm just trying to see what the intrest would be for a meet up.Beyond that it will have to be worked on depending just how many people would like to do it.Paul
Yeah, I'd be interested too, depending on where and when.
As for the what.... I could take a guess. Drinking and straight razor talk? :D
I would certainly be interested.
Beer, razors, beer..... razors. You know it gets better the more I think of it!!
I suppose we would all have to be "tooled up" also, so we would have to be carefull no one thinks we are planning on starting a gang fight!!
Cheers
Ray :)
Im up for it :tu
Hmm... A group of men all weilding knives meeting up for a drink or several...
... just another night on the town in Glasgow IMHO :roflmao
Seriously wherever it is i'd like the chance to maybe get some kit eg soaps. Sharing shipping costs... anyone see where i'm going with this? If volunteers are needed I could help organize this bit. As for meeting place... perhaps check the googlemap to find out where is central for as many people as possible.
Told my wife about this thread and she burst out laughing at me...
"You're going to a shaving convention!!!!" :roflmao
Meh. See if I care. Count me in :tu
Yup I would be interested. Is always good to meet like minded folk...
I'd be interested , pretty bogged down with work at the moment ( hmmm I said that a year ago here as well hence the lack of postings ) but now i'm on the thread I can keep my eye on it ....
Garry :tu
Im not mainland UK so it kinda counts me out.
Graham.
.. Just a quick Ferry trip away :)
I'd be interested in this. I'm not far from Birmingham, so travel isn't an issue.
hi guys would also be interested in meet depending where in the uk. possable topics could be for the more experianced to show how to hone and strop as a starter?
I would join in, there is nothing wrong in finding out about other people, I should think it would be be easy to recognise each other- we would be the odd looking chaps with the tissue paper stuck all over our faces.
Heh heh! And the scars. Don't forget to look for scars! ;)
I would be interested, but I'm out of the country for a while. If it happens when I'm back, I'll probably come along.
Now that the new year has come and gone and the DB is up and running again is it worth reviving this thread or was the whole thing just a passing fancy? I'd really like to do this and i'm sure i'd get HUGE benefit from what I coould learn. I cant be the only one.
So which is it, a whim or a wish? Or are we all waiting for someone else to organize it?
Sandy
I'm still only in if somebody else organises it and if it's at a time I am home in the UK!
Sorry to not be active in this one but I can't organise it from here and I have no idea when I will be available to attend either!
I would organise one over here but I think think the sum attendees would be me and wojtec.
Unless one day there is a european meet up. We would have to meet in solingen or something hehe
Wemyss Bay station bar Sandy ?? :roflmao ....
I'm still for it possibly , depending on my job situation , which is looking more bleaker by the day .
What a fantastic location Garry! :roflmao
That place is a dive. :td
Seriously though if this does go ahead and you want to we could share travel costs somehow or meet up and travel down together. I assume that it'll happen in England somewhere.
Solingen would be a dream place to hold it. Thats not much of a UK destination though :o
Sandy
In London, in a pub, close to a main-line station.
Alot of our members are in the midlands. Check the google map to find out where in the UK we are (or at least the ones who have listed ourselves).
For me a ticket to London is MUCH more expensive than a ticket to Birmingham or some such.
And dont forget flying may be a problem. How many of you want to get your pride and joy taken away from you at customs?

:gth
Yeah I can just imagine trying to explain a suitacase full of razors and other items to UK airport staff ......... "yeah I really do shave with these - hence the scars " :roflmao
I've still never had the courage to take a straight on holiday with me for that reason .
2 weeks of the year of crappy shaves ..
Garry
I need to meet up with folk who have got honing down to a fine art, know how to spot an eBay 'must have' and love getting stroppy! Can we resurrect this thought? If so I am willing to put some time into it as I think it would be a very useful hoot.
I assume that a midlands area venue is still the best choice? Maybe a hotel with good pub and room that we could get exclusive use of? I also assume a few people would want to stay over for one night or two? If these, or other details of your own, seem worthwhile then I am willing to do a search round and get prices and other venue info and feedback. There may of course be a member with a very large barn or mansion house that would be delighted to have a few dozen drunk folk with razors hanging around? Suggestions on a postcard but, as I say, I have things I want to refine and therefore am happy to put some effort into arranging a weekend out. Once a general idea was there with prices we could do a firm poll and book the day.
If this is already being organised and I am well out of step please direct me to the thread.
cheers
Stephen
I'd love to meet some of you guys.
As far as location - I think in fairness we should chose somewhere central so can I suggest somewhere near the Midland Oak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Oak) which is traditionally considered the center of England. I don't know the area but there must be a reasonable pub not too far away.
I'm still interested... as long as someone else does the organising! :p
I'm happy with a central location, and would be fine with staying overnight in a hotel.
Yeah for defo count me in. Depends on the day now though. Saturday is good for me but Sunday is not. And like most folks alot of the week is out. I would only have Wednesday. Since i'm working now i'll need some time to give advance warning to employer.
I dont think it should be a bar. I would LIKE it to be a bar but TBH how many landlords do you know that would agree to a large number of unknown men showing up all wielding knives?
In half-seriousness I think it might be worthwhile investigating advice from police on the organisation of this. Are there any policemen amongst us who are on the forums to give us advice?
Also for me money is an issue. I would like to stay over but since i'm travelling from Scotland as it is i'm afraid the Ritz is out.
I will keep a careful eye on this thread. :tu
EDIT: Oh and as far as organizing it goes I know this lovely town on the west of scotland called Wemyss Bay. :roflmao What do you think Garry?
I am definitely interested. Keep me posted. A good pub sounds great (I live by the Good Pub Guide), but I also expect the landlord would be unlikely to let a gang of fellas compare cut-throats over booze.
I would enjoy the chance to socialise, learn (honing) techniques and also perhaps a group buy.
I can just imagine my girlfriend thinking me an utter geek on this!
I think I know a couple of landlords who are reasonable enough to understand that a group of middle aged shaving geeks don't represent any significant danger even if they do have a lot of sharp objects.
As far as the legality is concerned - there is no legal problem with having possession of a sharp object if you've got a sensible reason for having it. Going to, being at, and returning from a meeting of straight shaving enthusiasts would certainly count as a justifiable reason for possession.
I'm not a lawyer but I am fairly sure about this.
I'm still up for a meet but I've got some other serious commitments until about July . If it's going to be sooner I'll seriously try my best to make it :)
It'll be good to meet up and see everyone in person - very appealing
Garry
hi guys I am defo up for a meet in the midlands keep all us uk guys posted could be good to compair info and see some of the more expereanced guy strut there stuff
Just checking out access points to the Midlands and perhaps for many the idea of a cheap flight into east Midlands airport might be a winner? Certainly I can jump on a plane in Inverness and go there return for £40. Plenty of venues to look into.
Should we put this into the 'meetings' area and perhaps set up a poll for time of the year etc. It would be really good to have a selection of people with experience coming along to make it attractive for everybody. Perhaps have a honing/stropping demo by an old hand/s, a selection of collections that people could talk everyone through. A talk and demo on basic restoration by someone? Could even take a couple of digipics each and add to a powerpoint presentation and everyone can get a chance to say why a certain razor is the best for them? I think if this has a chance of success it would need to have buy in from a few senior UK members who wouldn't mind inputting on the day. As I have said I don't mind the legwork to get venue etc sorted. So - setup a poll on the meetings section? Anybody happy to do some of the activities suggested?
Obviously I can also arrange a leisure activity as well as the obvious eating and drinking, once this seems to have more fullsome support.
cheers
Stephen
steven
I would be happy to to set up the poll (will have to ask members how to put one on this site) let me know if you want me to do it and the info we are going to vote on in the mean time I will ask around regarding getting the poll set up on srp
regards
tony
I'd be up for this, particularly for the chance to see people strop and hone as examples. I'm in London and carless so would either like to carpool or look for a location that's within reasonable reach of a train or coach station.
Cheers,
Justin.
Thought this was best moved on from this area to the meetings area so that a wider membership hopefully will see. Hopefully some senior members will get on board too - give us a steer on how to do things a wee bit better.
cheers
Stephen
Just a quick link in this thread to the UK meet-up thread in the proper meetings section. Be sure to post in there if you are still interested. That way you subscribe to that thread too.
