Hi. Yet another new guy with questions!

Hi

I've been considering on/off buying a straight razor for about a month now, but I'm not really sure at all what I should be looking for.

At the moment I'm thinking about a Sanguine I've seen on e-bay for about £8 just as a very cheap starter.

Then moving on to a Timor 'Blue Steel' 5/8" perhaps.

Is that a sound strategy? I'm aware that the Sanguine isn't a reputable brand, is the Timor any good?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Does anyone know where I can get a decent quality straight from in the UK (thats not too expensive).

Are there many wedge designs around? Most seem to be the concave style.

Skip the Sanguine, from what I have heard they're junk.

If you want a less expensive starter option you will be looking for something used.

The Timor would be really nice though.

You could do worse than to pick up a razor from the invisible edge. From all reports they are easy to deal with and send the blades out with a proper shave ready edge, which is vitally important when learning how to use one.

The shave ready razors he has are not the most beautiful, but they all have a bit of history to them. He's got a couple of wedges for sale at the moment - if that's the way you want to go.

Actually, having said that, those Wostenholms are a very nice looking pair, as is that J. Allen

Thanks for the response guys. I'll consider some of those off the invisible edge site rather than the sanguine. I didn't realise they would be so reasonably priced.

One question though; what would be the best way to go about sterilising it before use?

Odds are that between the cleaning, polishing and sharpening he had to do to get the razors looking as good as they do they are pretty clean. I have never worried overly about this so I just do a quick wipe down with rubbing alcohol. I know other people obsess about sterility a little more though, If you run a search on it I know there were several threads about what many people do.

P.S. I worry just as much with a new razor as with a vintage one.
