Hey guys,
I am wondering how necessary it is to strop after shaving. I rotate about 5 or so razors and am wondering if there are any advantages/disadvantages to stropping after shaving. I was told that a razor really should not be used every day to allow the blade to recondition itself over a period of 24 or so hours. Won't stropping after shaving counteract this? What are your thoughts? Thanks,

I know that there is a LOT of debate over whether the blade needs to "rest" - I personally don't believe it.
I strop after shaving (15 linen, 15 leather) simply to ensure I have all the moisture off the bevel before being put away - no other reason for me, anyhow.

Some of the instruction sheets that come with NOS razors actually recommend after shave stropping, I however am in the 'rest the razor' belief system... I guess what ever feels right to you on this one!!!!

Generally though, most don't need to oil their razors unless you're going to store them for a decently long period of time, or if you live in a really humid climate.

I only strop before shaving . After I shave I rinse my blade under HOT tap water , and dry it with cotton balls . I let it sit open with the blade perpendicular to the scales , and let it air dry overnight . I don't oil the blade , however I do put a drop of mineral oil on the piviot pin , now and then .
I use the same post-shave method my Grandfather did. Hot water rinse, wipe with alcohol, dry with a towel or TP, strop 2-3 laps on newspaper to be sure the edge is dry (so he said), then I use tea seed cooking oil (camellia). Grandpa used mineral oil or 3-in-1.
He also often used newspaper or the yellow pages before the pre-shave stropping, so I suspect he didn't just use it to dry the edge.
I don't know what club this is. I just rinse under HOT water. Dry with a towel, blow on the pivot and put it in a cedar lined drawer that I have. I have many razors but only have seven out that I shave with. Right now I have what my eight year old calls the farm. Two Ducks (a satin edge, a dwarf) chickens (two hen and roosters, old stock). Farmers (two red Imps, one round, one spike) and the Cat( Puma silver steel). None have shown rust yet.

I give mine 30 laps after my shave so it gets all the moisture and left over dried soap from the edge and prepares it for the next shave. I lap 50 times before I shave.

I strop only before shaving and honing. I strop
before honing simply to clean the bevel and
align the edge slightly.

Get the microscopes out! Shaving forces the edge slightly out of alignment. Steel has a memory and it will straighten up to a degree given a bit of time. For a thin razor edge the very edge of the razor will re-align itself somewhat in about 48 hours. Now stropping after a shave my not seem like it's doing much but run your hand over the strop after using it and see if you don't feel minuscule particles. I personally strop before each shave and I rarely have to hone those razors in my rotation. I keep my razors in a mug on the sink vanity. I rinse my blades in hot water, towel them off and then leave them mostly open, that is blade not touching the scales, to dry for the day. I use Dovo Sterol oil from time to time on the pivot areas. I have no rust on my razors. When I hone or restore razors I use Tuf-Glide as protection agent. Mineral oil or 3-1 oil are just fine too.
Right on Randy, I do the same except I blow dry my hair so I hit the razor and the brush on low heat to get all the moisture out before the oil.Quote:

IMHO I would not use 3-1 oil, it will protect the razor for sure but it is hard to get it all off that is the way it is designed which is great for protection butI am not sure it is so great for your face big deal probably not but with other great choices that actually are lubericating for your face why take the chance.
I am in the camp that endorses stropping after use but can't say I am as diligent every time. I do wipe the razors with alcohol and let them dry every time
