Hopefully I am posting in the right area, if not forgive my ignorance.
I would like to know if you travel with a straight? What about the airlines, what do you travel with(as carry on? I have been using my straight for a few months and I will be traveling so and was curious on what people trave with. Thanks

Don't take a straight in your carry-on, at best you'll be delayed and at worst arrested. It'll be fine in your checked luggage though. I haven't traveled by air since I started shaving with a straight again, so I haven't had to consider what to take, but I do know you DON'T want to have anything resembling a knife in your carry-on.
These homeland security types have no sense of humor--and won't recognize a str8 as an instrument for shaving.
Don't risk it. Pack it in your checked baggage.
I recently took two straights and a cheap hanging strop with me on a two week vacation to Cabo. I packed my razors in leather pouches produced from a fine SRP member, and put them in my checked luggage. I laid the strop flat in my suit case as well and didn't have any problems, then again I didn't try to take my Tony Miller latigo #2 with me. I don't suggest taking a strop you care a lot about as it may get damaged in transit. Other than that I packed my other supplies in my shaving kit and went. Just need to remember to take something to connect the strop to a door or drawer or whatever. Tony has thongs for some of his strops and Classic Shaving sells something similar for travel.
You could also take a paddle strop which may be easier but could see more damage. I know that Tony Miller is making up some box strops that also store razors for travel as well.
It can be done.

I certainly hope that security would not let you on the airplane with a straight razor after 9/11. As the others have said, check in is fine.
Since 9/11 the pilots have started locking steel reinforced doors.
I'm fairly sure you would chip your edge.
With large airlines, I leave my razor/strop in checked luggage. When taking bush planes or floaters, it doesn't matter. The pilots even let me handle the plane. Ironically I've taken my bike faster than we've been flying lol
I always put them in a box in my checked luggage. |I never trust the baggage ahndlers to be gentle so I make sure they are protected. I flew today with about 20 straights, 2 nortons, 3 strops and my restoration tools in my luggage with no problems at all. I know they would have looked at me strange if they had asked me to open my bag though!
Only when traveling by car. The last thing I want to happen to my straights is to be snatched away by some "overzealous" (read: greedy, thieving) TSA thug.
I'll be doing some traveling this spring and again this summer, so I've been thinking about this some. I don't think I'll be taking a straight with me, and I think I'll leave my DE razors at home, too. The thought of me in Nashville and my luggage in Cairo (or, more likely, in the hands of a thief) doesn't make me want to take valuable things with me. Most of the time most folks have their luggage show up at the same airport they do at the same time they do, but there are exceptions. For the same reason I have a turkey hunting shotgun in Tennessee at my parents' home that doesn't travel with me.

Sadly, I usually bring a DE on my travels. I like to

When I fly I take a cheap Wapi with me in checked-in luggage, good shaves and if it goes missing I dont really care.... its cheap remember.
Newspaper make for a very reasonable strop for 1 or two weeks.

Air travel has gotten to be such a roll of the dice for baggage, I'm now traveling as light as I can to avoid checked bags. Obviously that means leaving my straights at home :( . My last trip a couple of weeks ago, I took a dissassembled DE, with no blades, planning to buy some at the local CVS at my destination. I thought I would make it easy for the TSA folks and put the razor parts in the clear plastic bag with my carry on liquids. That just led them to ask questions about the razor parts (again, no blades), wanting me to take the end cap off the DE screw on handle. Asking me if I had blades, etc. I mailed it and my purchased blades home to avoid the same thing on my return flight. I'm on the road again soon and will mail the razor and blades ahead of me and back when I return. Beats getting slowed in security, and worth it to not shave with a hotel disposable. Such is life in the air these days. I could mail the straights the same way, but my routine is so broken when I travel, I just settle for the DE.

I'm sure someone here posted about a problem taking a razor with no blade through customs in their hand luggage. Can't remember if it was here or a different forum though.
When a bomb detector went off on me in Miami (I still have no idea b/c I don't even remember going near fertilized lawns), they went through my luggage. Had 2 cheap straights in the checked luggage and 1 disassembled Gillette Tech in the carryon. The TSA guy asked me whether I had blades in there as well, but they were in the checked luggage so he didn't make me take it out or anything like that.
