Looking to buy my first razor...suggestions?

I'm looking into shaving with a straight razor, and I'm unsure of buying a decent starting razor without investing too much money.

I've heard the site classicshaving is a good place to get quality items, so i was looking at this blade in particular, for price mainly.

Has anyone had any experience with this blade or the company that makes it? Also, i read that Lynn does honing through classicshaving but couldn't see the option anywhere. Is it deep within the checkout, or is there an option hidden somewhere that i have to add to the cart?

Also, any suggestions for a beginning strop would be appreciated. I'm eager to try it, but don't want to break the wallet right off the bat until i'm sure it's something i'm going to enjoy. At the same time, i don't want to skimp so much as to ruin my experience due to shoddy materials so i'm looking for a bit of advice.

As far as brushes and soaps...i read somewhere i'm able to pick these up a local walgreens to start with? If not, i'll order it at the same time as i pick up the blade and strop, but want to be sure.

You won't need a strop... That is a Shavette. It uses disposable blades. It is basically a handle/holder for single edged blades. I am currently using one and it gets the job done (although a real blade might be better). You will want a real one. I don't think it provides the same quality shave.

You won't need Lynn's honing service either... Which is probably why you can't find it.

Look at the Dovo's and TI's....their starters run just under $100 I think and both would be good quality razors that you could use for many many years to come.


EDIT: Talk to Tony Miller at thewellshavedgentleman.com about a starter strop.....boar brushes and Williams soap can be had at Wal-Mart for about $5 each to get you going....

Ahhh, well that explains alot.

So in that case, i'm completely open to idea's for a straight razor...one without a disposable blade. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as that goes?

Or do you think it would be a good idea to try the shavette first and see how i like it? I'm fairly certain i'll enjoy the process. I've thought it would be something to look forward to getting better at every morning and getting a close shave while i'm at it.

...or, you could could buy a shave ready vintage blade for a little less $$ here on the BST forum. Tony is the man to see about a strop. Welcome to SRP.
