what strop length do people use?

what strop length do people use?

I just got a 16" dovo strop and it seems to be a little to short, is this a typical strop length or do most people use longer ones?

I use a paddle that's about 12" long. Tony's strops are 17.5" (according to his site). I'd say that 1.5" is negligible in the long run. Like many things though, it just comes down to personal preference.:tu

I recently noticed that when I use a 20" hanging strop, I only use about 8 to 10 inches of it anyway. So I now use a homemade paddle more often. It is about 12" long with 8 1/2" of latigo on it (1.5 inches wide).

I normally use a 2 1/2 x 24 inch hanging strop, but would agree that 8-12 inches is really all that gets used in the process. I like the balance and feel of this strop for everyday use and for finishing all my hone work.

I prefer the professional style 2-1/2" x 24" strop. The Illinois Razor Strop Co. #361 is a good example.

Many of the imported strops are 16" overall length, not the stropping surface which is often 12".

My Starters and Originals are 24" less the handle and top hardware so you are left with 18" or so of usable surface. The Artisans and Paragons are all 24" (Dee Ring) to 29" (Handles) and have 17 1/2" of usable working surface.

I find that is more than enough as too much length leaves to much side to side flex in use.

I'm using an Illinois Strop, 2 1/2 by 23 inches long w/handles. Once I'm proficient, I'll move up to Tony's Latigo Dee Rings (which I have hanging behind the Illinois strop) So far, NO nicks. I've followed Lynn's advise and the procedure is working out very well.

600 mm long, 67 mm wide Kanayama Cordovan Hanging Strop

I think thats about 23.6 inches long, 2.6 inches wide but thats the entire length. Naturally I don't strop on the emblem stuff

Also have a small dovo Russian which I think I'll get pasted at some point, just have to figure out what fits best after a Chinese 12k. But I haven't read much about pastes yet.

Makes really good sense to me too. Yours arrived first, but I waited for my $12 special to get here so I could use it for the first two weeks. It collected the boo-boos, not yours!
