Hello to all. Another newbie to the world of Straights

I just want to say hello to everyone here and compliment on a very nice forum.

I am 29 yrs old from Norway and have decided to make the transition to straight razor shaving.
It has facinated me for years, but i have never gotten around to it.
I will also add that i have some troubles with razorburns both from disposable cartridges and from the electric shavers.
Theese are my main reason for giving straights a shot.

I eagerly await my gear as it was ordered yesterday, and will apparently be in my possession sometime tomorrow.

The stuff i've bought is:
Dovo 106 5851N Violet Wodd Extra Hollow Grind
Dovo Rindlender Strop
Vulfix 223 Super Badger
Alum block
Miklagard shaving soap

I will go out to look for a hone today, and i imagine i will have to find out how to hone first. Before i can start shaving with it.

Any advice is very welcome, and i will try not to lop my head off :)

Hi and welcome, nice to see another Norwegian around here.

I would suggest that you get yourself an ebay special to learn on, and not your new Dovo. Do write a review on the Miklagard soap, I'm curious about it, as for hone hunting, please report back if you find a suitable hone in a store i Norway.

Welcome aboard Hector. I'm glad we're having a strong Euro showing here. I've got 3 comments:
1) You won't lop your head off or cause any serious injury without consciously trying to do so.
2) You need to get that razor professionally honed if you want it to shave properly. I'm not a big believer in DOVO's factory honing jobs.
3) Get something to touch up your edge with every 5-15 shaves. Either a pasted paddle strop or a fine finishing hone.

Welcome, Hector! I have to agree with FiReSTaRT; for your first shave, it's recommended to send the razor out to be honed by a professional honemiester. The ones on this forum are masters of the craft, and will provide you with a SHARP razor. Grab an old razor off of eBay to practice the honing, and check out some of the documents in the archives here.

I don't have much in common with Norway, except that I JUST watched my new Isaacs in Norway DVD :)

Lynn's DVD will shorten the learning curve substantially. Thanks to our admins, you can look at a clip from the DVD on YouTube to get a feel for it. I found it really helpful, as have most of the people who have used it.

As the earlier posters have pointed out, it's very important to start with a properly honed razor and the usual advice is get your razor honed by someone who knows what they are doing (we call these guys Honemeisters, and there are quite a few of them that can help you get started). If nothing else, this will remove one variable from your early shaves and will give you a point of reference for your own honing in the future.

I just have one thing to say about the "send to honemeister" tip...

I mean no disrespect, or do not intend to offend anybody here, but sending it away to a Meister of the crafst will most likely take a couple of weeks, and therfor i will probably have to learn this the hard way.

As i pointed out earlier, i come from Norway and i fear the ammount of hone meisters in my general area is waaaaay low.

Don't get me wrong, i appreciate the advice and not least of all the gravity of the situation.
I have been out today and gotten a 4000 and a 6000 hone so i can at least give it a shot.

However i would be very interested if someone in close proximity of Norway has a "shave ready" for sale, and will be able to ship it on the double.

Again thanx for the warm welcome, and i seriously hope that i have not stepped on any toes so far.

As for my fear of the time it will take getting it honed by Lynn it is not fear of him beeing slow or in any way sloppy with his work, but rather a well based distrust in postal/parcel/transporting companys around the world.

bjorn: i found a tool shop in stavanger(where i live, wich had 1000, 4000, and 6000 stones. they provide tools for wood carving and is so far the only ones i've found with the hones at hand)

Chances are you won't find one in Norway, but depending on how it's shipped, even if it comes from the States, it can get there fairly quickly.

A little update here..

I have just picked up my equipment and I have a little questiuon..
The Rindleder Sollingen strop has a white backside, wich according to DOVO homepage consists of "hanf"(probably german for something) i dont know what this means but i assume that this is the course side of the strop, to be used before the leather side???

apart from that, it looks really good and i am looking forward to trying this.
