Gently as she goes

I'm new to using an open razor to shave. I have one usable razor. I have a strop. I have one nice brushless soap (American Crew) and one solid soap(Wilkinson Sword) that is very cheap and quite nice. Oh! and a stypic pencil!
My first shave went ok. I looked clean shaven and had three small nicks. I have had about seven open razor shaves now. I can shave most of my face and neck as close as I could get with a good multi bladed landfill razor without cutting myself, and my skin looks healthier.
One bit of advice I would like to give even newer newbies than me is "Dont "push" the blade at all" there is no need to. If the blade is shave sharp, you really don't need to. If you allow the blade to "drop" squarely over the area you are shaving, you will not cut yourself!
BTW, I think I have got RAD :confused: just bought a nice old square point Genco. It had to be done. Nice edge on them, or so I have heard:shrug:

Congrats on your success, Marcus! And RAD is no joke! LOL, I have 4 razors already, and I'll be grabbing a 5th this weekend!

I have to be honest, I look like a contortionist (spelling?) when I'm doing my left hand side neck. But I did a half good job this afternoon. I cannot feel anything under my chin, It's still there BTW.

haha, are you shaving left side with right or left hand? Shaving with the opposite hand can make it a little difficult at first. Of course, shaving with your non-dominant hand is difficult as well, LOL.

Oh my avatar? That's my 1 yr old daughter, Mackenzie. She's a blast.

EDIT: I think she's only 10 months in that particular picture.

I have two girls 2 and 6. They are a pair of nutters!!

I have a Geneva 5/8 Spike, Geo Wostenholm IXL (needs polished and honed), Genco (needs honed), and a Z**pk.

I'll be picking up a C-Mon this weekend, and hopefully a Wade & Butcher. The antique store I recently went to had about 15 razors! :)

Ah, so you have three razors and a fruit peeler! I have a razor and a potato peeler so I know how you feel. It's hard to hone chrome, isn't it?

LOL yes, yes I have a fruit peeler. Or as cannonfodder (?) noted, they might make good cigar cutters.

If I was you, I'd put a brush on your list of things to get when you can. It adds to the fun factor and also helps the hairs stand up (and exfoliates the skin).

Sorry I do have a brush, its a man-u or something, pure bristle??(i know badgers better)?? but I am going to wait till I can afford a Simpson, when the wifes not looking!!
I have a Genco head barber on the way, the shop says it's silly sharp!

I've had mixed experiences with Simpson brushes, I had one replaced twice as it shed hairs like a cat in the summertime, the two replacements were just as bad so I got a refund in the end. Apparently it was just a bad batch, but it destroyed my confidence in a supposedly 'premium brand'.

My recommendations for brushes would be either a Rooney or a Shavemac. Both have a rock solid reputation, and are much more reasonably priced than other brands. For example with those two you could get a Silvertip brush for the price other makers charge for Best or Super. IMHO of course. The SRP Shavemac would be a very good choice, in fact I'm trying really hard not to add my name to the list!
