I have read through some previous threads about sterilization. I am currently at my girlfriends and my blade arrived today, i am extremely busy for the next few days and need a shave this evening.
I bought the razor in the B/S/T Forum and i need to sterilize the blade.
I dont have much around the place here, Will boiling water do the trick? or am i going to have to go without a shave for a week :(
Quickly add it has been in the mail for 10 days aswell :)
1 part chlorox + 1 part hot water
swish the blade around in it for 5 min. you're done.
if you leave it in longer, it will make the blade rust
Unfortunatly i dont have any access to chlorox :(
Any other options with household items?
What about a boiling water/dettol mix?
I don't think you'll want to boil the blade, but I wonder if a quick dip in boiling water would do the trick. Hydrogen peroxide & rubbing alcohol was what I rubbed on the blade. My mother always used that for disinfectant, but I don't know how to actually know if it's sterilized
Rubbing alcohol, as Lee said, works well. You could rinse it with soap and VERY hot water...as hot as your tap can get. Bacteria would have a very hard time living through that.

Boiling water won't hurt the blade unless you leave it in there - it may affect the scales though.
The steel is treated at much higher temperatures than 100C so unless the thing is made of mercury or lead, you should be right.
Add a bit of dettol or some other antibacterial agent if you are really concerned.
Hey guys just used the water from the tap ( It gets very very hot in this house ) And some Dettol over the blade it states 99.9% disinfection.

Have fun! Remember, take it slow and enjoy the shave. Make sure you know where the edge of that razor is at all times, and never pull horizontally! :)

Unfortunately none of the methods described above will have any impact on viruses. You'll either have to take your chances or else make use of a bona fide disinfectant.

That's what I use for brewing equipment. Assume it would work just fine for razors as well. Someone that knows more can correct me if I'm wrong. Applaud me if I'm right... haha.
How long can a virus live on a steel blade in the open air and sunlight?

Alcohol only kills germs, not viruses. As Randy said above, barbercide is the best stuff to use. I just recieved a vintage razor from Gugi and took it to my local barber and asked if he wouldn't mind popping it in some barbercide for ten minutes or so (get rid of those Gugi-cooties :roflmao only joking, Gugi :D ). He was happy to do so, and we spent the ten minutes talking about my new straight razor, which he was fascinated by.
I don't really know this gentleman, but we do pass the time of day when we meet in our local shop. If you're too shy to walk into a barber's and ask outright, just take your razor with you next time you visit the barber. I'm sure they'll be happy to do it while you get your hair cut, and you can spend some time recruiting a new convert to straight razors.
I checked around with some medical places that have heat sensitive equipment to sterilize. They use Cidex OPA. It is highly active against bacteria and viruses and some types of TB.
It is pricey ($60/Gal), but I am going to see if I can get some.
Bleach works well also as long as you get it rinsed off completely.
after a little more research, I have found a product that is much more "cost effective". It is safe for surfaces made from "non-porous vinyl, stainless steel, painted surfaces, Plexiglas®, Formica® and glass."
I am thinking one could get by without using any water:
"A thorough rinse with potable water is required for surfaces in direct contact with food."

In truth, you can only sterilize it with an autoclave, and that would certainly take out the scales. Boiling water would do a pretty good job, but it will also melt the scales. But, if you can hold just the blade in the water for about 30 minutes you should be fine.
You can disinfect using any number of chemicals. Ethyl or Isopropyl alcohol at 70% for about 20 minutes will kill most bad actors. Ethanol is more effective in that it will kill hydrophilic viruses whereas Isopropanol will not. But Isopropanal will kill Hep B, Hep C and HIV. Niether of these will kill spore forming bacteria such as TB or Anthrax.
Disinfection is defined as killing a sufficient number of pathogens to render the object acceptably safe. Sterilization is defined as killing all pathogens.
