Thread: A little assistance please

I was watching a show yesterday, Modern Marvels, and it was all about sharpening. Showed all kinds of awesome computer graphics and discussed edge grinds, heat treat, and sharpening tools.

I saw a barber using a smooth combo stone to sharpen his straight razor, brown on one side and black on the other. (He used water on it). He then used a canvas/leather barber strop to finalize his work. I want a stone like this! It was more square than rectangular. Anyone know where I can find one? I have searched the web to no avail.

Did you see him use both side of the stone?

Otherwise, it's possible the black side could have been a slate material.

If he did use both sides, it very well could have been a 4K Blue Belgian and a 8K Yellow Belgian. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure if they sell these in a "combination" form anymore. I think they used to.

Yep. He used both sides, then moved to the stropping of the razor

Your description of the hone used sounds a lot like a combo hone made by the American Hone Company. I have one, called the " Reliance" hone - black on one side, reddish on the other. Unfortunately they are no longer made, but there may be others similar out there.

Frictionites fit this description. I also have one labeled "Al's sharpening hone" that is two different artificial grits--one brown and one tan. In performance, I would say it is comparable to any of my coticules.
