Newbie from Denver

I would like to take the time to say hello, and let you know a little a bout me.

I am 46 years old, married, living in the Denver area, Former US Army Medic, and currently working in the health care industry.

I am pretty new to wet shaving, and have become a new DE shaver.
I found that the shave I get is much better that what I have been doing.

I currently have a Badge hair brush, different soaps,a nd creams, lotions, you know.. all the finer things in wet shaving.
I have a small collection of DE razors, which is pretty nice.

Now, I suppose the Natural progression of things is to try my hand at Straight Razor Shaving.
I have to admit, I have had this curiosity of straight razor shaving for a long time, I just never thought it was a practical way to achieve a close shave.

I have been here lurking around, reading, and reading, I am almost ready to take the leap in buying all the necessary equipment in straight razor shaving. I almost bought things last night, but backed out, because I was just not sure of what I am doing.

I am pretty much set on the Dovo razors, in the Carbon steel.
I am still a little lost on the Strops what is a good starter, and will serve me well for years to come.
And then the Hones...I think I have it down that I need a 4k/8k stone, maybe a 12k stone.

I wish there was a one stop shopping for all the needs... No big deal though, I figure I am pretty much ready to make the purchase.

as for a one stop shopping experience many of our vendors offer "starter kits" that will have everything you need... which will get you a nice shaving razor, a strop and some soaps and a brush but (I'm willing to bet) that since you have one they will adjust the kit to fit your needs.

If you're ever in Boulder, you might like to check out 'Peppercorn', which is located on the Pearl St. Mall. It's a nice store with lots of cooking utensils and food related items, but they also have a small shaving section upstairs. Last Christmas when I was there, I saw some Omega products, including the soap tubs(Proraso). They also stocked Musgo Real items , and Institut Kerite shaving cream tubes. There were even a few brushes on display.

Oh..there was also a HUGE new barber shop right on 28th St. Something about old time shaving on the sign I think. Can't miss it........somewhere between Canyon and Pearl I think on the west side of the street.

I used to go down to Cherry Creek and there is a few stores in that area where you can score some good cream samples like Trumpers. There are also some good leather stores down off of sante fe if I remember, not sure if they sell strops or not. Man now I miss home

Oh also check out Melt in the Cherry Creek Mall, there are others in the Denver area, but I am from the Glendale area so I am most familar with that are. They make a great shaving cream and pre-shave oil as well as other good products.

Man I started straight shaving in Denver back in 1981-82 my first straight was purchased at the "Naked Edge" that used to be in the Tamarack Square shopping center on Hampden and Tamarack.....

I have a nice badger hair brush, so I am cool with that.
I have the soaps, and the Oil.

I am going to get a Dovo razor, I was waffling between a SS blade or a Carbon Steel blade, and I am going to start with a Carbon steel blade.

Which reminds of a Question...As far as Dovo razors are concerned, is there a difference in blade quality form say the Tortoise shell Straight that sell for a bit cheaper than the other ones Dovos Carbon steel blades on Lynn's site?

I am not trying to be a cheap skate...I am just curious.

I do have an old Straight I got at a flea market....I figure I can practice honing, and Stropping it before I screw up a much nicer Straight.

A question on Paste.

If I plan on buying good wet stones like recommended here. 4k/8k, and maybe a 12k hone.
Do I really need to mess with an abrasive paste on a different leather strop?

I am just trying to get everything straight in my head, before I place my orders.

I know this has probably all been answered before, and I do apologize, I have read so much already, and my head is going to explode... LOL....
