Another newbie with lots of questions :)

Hi everyone,

I just experienced my first strait razor shave this weekend at a NYC classic style barbershop and liked it so much that I picked up some gear to have a go at it myself :)

My first setup is a Dovo Buffalo razor, Dovo leather strop, yellow band Dovo strop paste, badger hair brush, etc, etc.

My question is mainly about getting the blade "shave ready". The Dovo edge right out of the box doesnt pass the hanging hair test, so I am guessing it isnt anywhere near sharp enough for a decent shave. I'm also guessing that stropping won't be enough either, so it seems like I would have to hone the blade first? Which stones will I need for a new Dovo to get it tuned up properly? How much honing does a brand new blade typically need to get it shave ready?

PS - if anyone knows of a good shop that can professionally hand hone my razor in NYC I would seriously consider bringing it in for an initial hone. After that its mainly just stropping for maintanence and a hone every few months no?

Actually, it is probably very near ready. In my experience, factory blades need just a little work by an experienced hand. Get one of our honemeisters to put that blade right. It'll cost about $20 plus shipping, but if you get somebody inexperienced to try it you'll likely wreck your blade.

3 months of shaving now.
After searching for blades. I found one that was perfectly honed by a seller. I have hones available to me, but I'm still learning to do that. I agree with the previous shaver. Have a professional honemeister set you up. there might be many in NYC. Ask around the sight. If I hear of anyone. I'll pass the info along.

Thanks. Can anyone here recommend a good place to bring my blade to in Southern Connecticut or NYC to get it honed? I know there are mail in places, but Im eager to get started and I would rather just take it in locally.

You should start a new thread with the title:

"Need to have razor honed in NYC"

Maybe a meister in the area will notice it.

Alternatively, you can mail it out and have it honed. I'd be happy to hone it for you for $15.00, you pay shipping both ways. It shouldn't cost more than about $8 total for the shipping.

I'll hone it up for you if you take care of the shipping. Don't count on the hanging hair test though. The test is in the shaving.
