Straight blades in Toronto

Hello everyone,

I'd like to mention that this forum has been very helpful as it has saved me some money by bringing to my attention that zeepk and simco blades are basically crap, therefore stopping me from buying them.

Ok so heres my question, i live in toronto and Im in need of a decent if not perfect straight razor. I've checked some stores and they usually have only one per store, which isnt very pleasing. I started looking for the razors that you use safety blades , and unfortunately the only one available is the dovo shavette, which does not have a very classic look to it, and i should say it looks rather cheap ( but sells for around $65).
I was wondering if you guys knew about a place that sells the classic straight razors? preferably new ones.

Well clicking any of the adds on this site should lead you do online stores that will ship to you.(well the ebay adds might lead you to crap razors, but the individual sites should be fine)

If you want a brick and mortor store, that might be harder.

I have checked the provided websites, the razors they are selling are a bit expensive for my budget as im only a student. I found a blade at Toronto hair supplies, its a store at bay and dundas. they sell for $75 and i dont have the slightest idea about what they are made of because i was in a hurry. Im going to check them out agian tomorrow, i'll post info about them.:)

If price is the main issue then buying from a member here is probably your best bet. You should be able to get a shave ready razor for under $50 US.

Look in the classifieds

+1 on that - any blade you buy at a store will also require honing, even if it says "shave ready." Buy a razor from a member here, and you'll be set...go to Tony Miller at The Well Shaved Gentleman, Heirloom Razor Strop Company, Straight Razor Shaving Supplier and buy his apprentice strop and/or starter strop...that should have you up and running for a small outlay.

Oh, and also, PM Kenrup - he has complete starter kits available (search on his name, he has a thread in the vendors section just about his kits) that are a great way to get into straight shaving.

Good luck - but do your research before you lay down your cash - stores in Toronto are definitely not the way to go.

This is not entirely true. More online stores such are prehoning at least some of their razors, so as long as it notes that it was honed by the store and not just the factory you should be OK.

I found this forum a couple of years back when searching zeepk razors. After a quick search I concluded that almost anything would be better and ran for the hills. Now, after a couple of years, I have a collection of razors in various states. Some look like crap and need restoration, some have shiny blades in need of honing and still others are in rotation.

I know that you said that you would prefer a new blade, but do look in the classified area here for an idea of what a “used” razor can look like. Many of the members restore these razors to better than new condition and ask a pittance for the amount of work that they have done. If you are still determined that new is better then you will likely need to send it to one of the members to be honed anyhow. In the mean time you will need to remember that you have to buy a strop regardless of weather you buy new or used.

ok, so i went downtown looking for this blade. I found a dovo, for $134 but then i found a feather, which uses safety razors. i bought that, i shaved a few minutes ago. I'd say it was a pretty good shave for the first time, 1 or 2 really unnoticeable cuts, and it was a pretty close shave. Im gonna keep shaving with this until i get the hang of the technique, then ill be moving on to the classic blades.

I am brand new to this website, and am currently shopping for my first razor, and in doing so, have found a website for an actualy store in Ingersoll, which is roughly an hour and a half, maybe two hours west of Toronto, just before you get to London.

I just now recieved an e-mail which says quote: "HI DAVE ! YES ! we have a assortment of old , and antique ones, all new ones , are the insert blades in plastic or alum handles, everything in all price ranges . Thanks BILL"

I have not been to this store, and it might be several weeks before I go, but it is an interesting lead. Thier site is On The Edge Collectable Art & Cutlery, Canada's Largest Knife and Sword Store

I was disappointed with what I found in Toronto when I started straight shaving. I'm gonna echo the other comments that direct you to our vendors here or the classifieds. THAT'S where you'll get a good blade for a good price in shaving sharp condition.

Antique Razors - Toronto Collectibles For Sale - Kijiji Toronto

I bought a razor from this store, which is 2 hours West of Toronto, just before London, and received an email from the owner saying he's having some razors custom made. In response to an email I sent him, he responsed with:

"at present we are having 60 real razors and 60 custom leather strops being made, with our own name on them, in 5 different colors they should be here within a month or so, just in case your friends need some......

.......they will be antiques style, new , and very affordable."

Bill is the owner of this store, and you just couldn't ask for a nicer guy to deal with. He told me he makes his strops from a vintage pattern, and they are the original size as a vintage strop.
