Just what is Chromium Oxide???

I know this is covered on several threads but for me, I still find it ambiguously defined. If I put in Chromium Oxide in eBay, I get green paint:shrug: would that work on a razor??
At Woodcrafts website I get Micro Fine Honing Compound, and Chrome Oxide Compound. Is this the same, would it work with a razor?
Others suggest getting some powder and then mixing with oil:shrug:

My understanding is that CrO is a .5 micron abrasive to be used as a final polisher for a razo, but the darn thing is impossible to obtain without going through some special connection here. While the CrO on woodcrafts seems ok, MANY do not recomend it.
I'm looking for pastes that are easy to purchase, readily available, and more importantly WORK.

This stuff is the break through magic solution. (But only once you've already gotten pretty good at honeing anyway)

It will take a razor from "I guess this is what it should be" to "Wow. Ok, now I get it"

Cr2O3 is a well kept secret, those in the know won't let the cat out of the hat. :D

Check the classifieds for Chris L. This is good stuff but believe it when he says a little goes a long ways. It does!

Bah! pastes - all you young whipper snappers want paste. Why, when I was a lad, we were given a brick, and felt lucky to have that! Even luckier if it missed our head when they were giving them out!!

I think the tip to contact Chris L is a good one - lots of happy people report good success and speedy delivery from that fine gentleman.

As to what chrome oxide is, I too was always under the impression it was what they added to paint base to make it green. But I think there are a few different "chrome oxides" out there, so I'm probably wrong.

Chrome oxide is well, chemically speaking chrome oxide like aluminum oxide or cerium oxide or titanium oxide. Whether it has an added ingredient or some carrier is another story and the size of the particles makes a big difference also. Back in my college day I worked in the geology lab polishing rocks among other things so I used all these various polishing compounds.

So, what would happen if I order a bit from my chemical supply company. Getting lab grade stuff? Would that be better than any of the other Chromium Oxides out there?

That was my thought as well. Filtering it will be the fun part!:cry:

Why filter? Grain size? You could dissolve it, spread it out and let it air dry to make a finer "grain." Aren't there instructions for the powders where you add it to water to make a paste?

Lapidary supply places carry it, too. It's a common polish for faceters, and is often labled as good for difficult-to-polish metals as well as rock.

The potential problem with that, is has the lab grade stuff had the same quality control standards for grain size as the lappidary grade stuff?

How solulable is chromium oxide(specificaly Cr2O3)

Sorry if this is changing the thread a bit. Does anyone have 1.0 ChromeOx?
