Stroping question

Greetings all.

I typically strop after shaving. However I often read about people stroping before shaving.

Does it make a difference when you strop? Or should you strop after shaving and also strop before shaving?

I have about 30 straight shaves under my belt (chin!) and stroping after shaving seems to be working pretty good so far. But I still have a lot to learn and I won't learn if I don't try something new.

The majority of straight users tend to strop right before the shave, in fact most strop while the first layer of lather is on the face to make sure that it has time to work on the whiskers....
Some of us actually strop again before the second pass, again while the lather is working on the whiskers...
All this of course is personal preference, but you asked
Stropping after the shave is mostly used to make sure the edge is clean and dry, again a personal thing....
The belief still remains that the edge needs to rest overnight then be re-aligned right before the shave...

As gssixgun said, it is generally accepted that stropping should take place just before the shave, based on the theory that a blade should be brought into alignment and/or possible micro-corrosion at the edge should be dealt with prior to shaving.
If that's all true, than you should clearly experience a difference, once you start including a pre-shave stropping session.

Do a search for the Grand experiment. I dealt with this issue a couple years back. In the end it makes no difference whether you strop before or before and after.

I used the straight this morning and stropped afterwards. I will be using it again tomorrow morning and will strop before the shave.
