New Guy with a Question or 2.

Hello everyone.

I just found this site the other day. I got a straight razor and just like any broad head or knife I get I started to sharpen it. I have it hair cutting sharp (shaves arm hair, but needs more work). Anyway, The razor I have is from BudK.com I know it not a real good straight razor, but I can use it to practice with. I have an old wet/dry honing stone and some leather strop. I almost have the bevel that was on it off and a nice edge starting. The maker of the razor is Tomahawk, Its blade is 2 7/8" long XL1026 Stainless Steel. I still need to get mug/brush & soap.


I know the razor not top line, but do you think it would be a good starter?

I've seen those on eBay and never thought they would be any good at all. The only way to tell is to get a shave ready razor from a member here through the Classifieds and compare.

Unfortunately, that razor is barely a knife. While it may cut the hair off your arm i definitely would not advise trying your face.
please look in the wiki for the list of unusable razors to help prevent future problems.

the first razor i ever bought was a Tomahawk off ebay at the time i knew nothing of razors i never was able to shave with it now i got it sitting for decoration i would check the classifieds here or go to vintagebladesllc.com i have learned you get your moneys worth when it comes to straights my $120 dovo is no comparison to the $6 ebay razor. :gl:

I didn't see tomahawk listed so that's good. Plus the blade has made in China. If it doesn't shave good I'll use it as a hunting knife. I just lost my job so I can't buy a real straight razor yet. I have been looking and found one or two I might be able to get that are under $100.00.

Thanx for the info. At lest I'll have my honing & stropping down for a straight razor working this one. I'll keep Y'all up 2 date.

I would strongly recommend looking in the Classifieds on this forum. There are plenty of QUALITY razors, many vintage, that are shave ready for well under $100.00

This is one of the places I was looking at for them...

I think that most people find it difficult to hone some of these "unknown" razors. The Zeepk case have been well documented. If you can get it sharp, that is another story. For the sake of comparison, as others have suggested, you may want to consider buying a "good" razor and make your own conclusions. it may be very informative if you post your results.

I'll do that..It does give my arms a nice close smooth shave now, but the face is the true test. I can compare it to my throw away razors. Then when I get a Good razor.

Thinking on one from here for a used one & This one for a New one. There is also This one as well. What does everyone think of my 2 choices on a new Razor?

Either of those would be good IMO.

The razors are both good. I think that you can do a bit better with prices. Check SRD.

Believe it or not, “stainless steel”, especially “surgical grade” is usually the kiss of death for a straight razor. The steel just crumbles when it is sharpened thin enough to be truly shave sharp. Exceptions are Inox stainless, cryogenically tempered, usually in the $150 plus range.

If you got your cheapy shaving arm hair it is PROBABLY still junky but that is better than I ever got my cheapie. A good edge on a straight will plow arm hair off in a puffy ridge, no effort, it will almost seem magical that it happens. Just some basic “what is sharp” info. If you take it to your face just don’t push or hack. This is the difference between a $100 blade and a $10 blade. Personally I think there must be some decent cheapies out there, though I have not encountered them. Only other thing I can warn you about is don’t drive yourself crazy trying to get a shaving edge on steel that will never take the edge even if you are doing it right. Practice is good unless it is doomed to be futile. The Dovo will at least give you a solid benchmark of what good steel will feel like, both honing and in shaving.

for that kind of money i'll pick the tortoise special at straihtrazordesigns. actually, before that i'd pick a vintage razor in the classifieds.
