The average guy hones it when its dull. Some hone before it gets dull, some hone after it gets dull.
I hone my blades once a month, whether they need it or not. They could go longer, but why bother. I miss honing them.
I have too many to hone them all each month but if I go more than a month without honing a couple I just seem to get mean and ornery.
We're not trying to be funny here. You just hone them when they need it whether its after 10 shaves or a 100.
What everyone is saying, is it's basically a personal thing. When your razor starts to drag on your face and stropping no longer does the trick, you probably need to do some work. Check the WIKI for razor tests. You could try some pastes, like chromium oxide, or the Diamond pastes, .5 or .025, or a Coticule, maybe the Norton 4/8k. Whatever you have...
For the normal guy, a honed razor should last 2-3 months between honings depending on beard type, etc.
Lynn
Lynn,
As smokelaw observed, there may be none of us who are normal. :rofl2: I have always wanted to count myself among that number but seem to keep running out of digits. I've honed a few razors for myself, thanks to your DVD tutorial, and seem to have done it successfully. I've even redone it on a few of the favorites which seem to get used much more frequently than a few stragglers in the rotation.
So, thanks for the help and counsel and I'll try to see if I can fit into that 2-3 month window. Oh, oh, that was for the normal guys. Hmmmm, that will probably change a few variables, maybe even some of the constants.:gaah:
I think I should probably plan on always keeping my coticule loaded.:w
I'd say, open to any criticizism that would befall me, that atleast 40% of the time I'm rehoning because of something I've done on the strop rather than just normal long term dulling.
AFD,
You know this admission isn't terribly reassuring for most the of us who think we may be borderline competent, or approaching normal as Lynn said.
:gth Does this mean the whiskers may have won game, set, and match??
OMG, does this further indicate that the cognoscenti should invest in Norelco futures? AFD, say it ain't so.:bow
Actually, I know how it goes as I thought at one time the world's short hairs were well held within my grasp. And now I learn that either there are a lot more short hairs out there or my grasp is not nearly as strong as I thought it was... or both.
No, I just re-hone more than "normal". I recommend everyone have a stone and know how to use it. I wouldn't invest in Norelco, Ford maybe . . . even my taxes go to keeping them solvent.
I think there is an important connection between strop pressure and stock values though . . .
