My first shave! I've joined the ranks of you elite gentlemen.

Good afternoon, I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday!

Not more than half an hour ago I used my newly aquired straight razor for the first time, though I was only "testing the waters".

I only did half a shave, starting with the easy parts, and this first timer decided to call it quits before heading to the harder parts.

I did my cheeks and the sides of my throat with the straight razor, and finished under my nose, the front of my throat, and the sideburns with a Fusion.

What I DID do with the straight I think went quite well, getting a close shave in some places, not so close in others, with only a little tiny speck of blood. Basically, for my first time, it wasn't a disaster.

Can't wait for it to grow back now and try it again!

Sounds like you did great. It only gets better from here on in. Even more so when you chuck those disposables, but that really is your call.

Great first time, Dave! It's truly amazing how dupped we've been by Gillette about "the best a man can get..." You'll get 100 times the shave that any fusion or Mach 3 can provide, and be 300 times the man doing it!

Congrats again - it only gets better from here!

Congrats Dave. Actually you are converting to straights as several people here have suggested to others. They suggested doing the sideburns and cheeks for a while and moving further as you get use to the blade. And yes, it only gets better from here. Take you time and enjoy the journey. Welcome to the club!!

I hope that's true I was bought a dovo stainless for christmas and did my first shave a full one, and it was about the same as a mach 3 in most areas but slightly poorer in others I hope as I keep using it I get a closer shave with experiance

I've been shaving with a straight for 6 months or so, it takes a little getting used to, and learning to strop etc is a little time consuming, but I have to tell you a really sharp straight is a thing of joy. I encourage you to stick with it , it's awesome.

There's a learning curve. For the first time or so out, you sound like you're doing pretty well. Honestly, the important part is, enjoy it. Technique is all. That includes, lathering, stropping etc. You possess the tool, now you have to learn how to use it. (Speaking personally, the chin was incredibly difficult. Correct stropping is so key in that area.)

welcome to srp you have learned like all the others here... there is nothing better then the feeling you get from a str8 shave not only a better shave but a feeling of accomplishment :gl:
