How often to hone

I am eagerly waiting my first straight razor to arrive in the mail - a King 5/8 spike point, along with my Tony Miller strop

How often does one have to hone a straight? weekly? monthly?

Suggestions would be appreciated.

There should be one initial honing to establish the bevel and sharpen/polish the blade, after that it can be maintained indefinately with a barber hone and strop.

it depends a lot of factors.
1 what type steel is your razor has.
2.how it has been honed before
3.owner's stropping techn
4.toughness of the facial hair
5 some people has similar to the forest (heheehhehe)won't last 2 days this is just a joke.
etc
at least right honed blade i think should last 3 months if you shave every over day.

If you're asking how often a shave-ready razor needs to be touched up, the answer is, it depends. Right now, I'm shaving with one razor and I touch it up about once a week. My barber says that I shouldn't have to do it more than twice a month and he's probably right. There are members here that haven't done anything but strop for over a year but I think they must not have any facial hair :roflmao.

The answer is: "when they need it". Not sooner or later. The exact time when this is going to happen is hard to predict but according to Lynn, for average people, this is estimated to be between 2 and 3 months.

If you get to a point where stropping just makes no improvement in the shave at all, it’s honing time. This is assuming that stropping used to make all the difference on a given blade. IE, that you are stropping correctly.
