Hi everybody - another newbie to the fold...

Well, I've arrived! First of all can I say what a pleasure it is to have access to this site - such a wealth of experience and knowledge. Grateful thanks especially to Lynn for the DVD received in record time today. I can heartedly recommend this as a great resource for any newbie - packed full of useful information and demonstrations. Excellent work.

I look forward to being part of this community both as an 'apprentice' and maybe later with a voice of experience. I can honestly say that I might have given up already had it not been for the forum.

I'm hailing from the UK in the Midlands. A Christmas gift of a stainless straight (I had hinted strongly!) had me enthused very quickly, so much that I had to purchase a new Dovo within a week (well, we have to 'rest' our razors don't we? :w ). I'm pleased, and smoothly shaved (though I admit I had to get a load of research in to overcome a few days of soreness). Bring it on....:tu

From one apprentice to another welcome. While I have been posting a bit here I am very much a new member, still. You see I got a bit discouraged about using my straight back in early 08 and went back to my double edges before picking up the straight again in January of 09 and I have gotten much better at wielding the straight after taking it up again this month. I am still very much a apprentice myself.

Ok Moggs. I am curious to know why a modern person has decided to go the straight route. I am not accusing, I am in this boat also. I jumped in because I thought it was retro cool.:rock: Now I like the shave.

Thanks guys. Hi Craig - I'm not really certain. Thanks for the 'modern person' reference - I'm well into middle age but still as young as I ever was! Do you know, I think it takes a certain sort of person, with 'traditional' values. I also fully appreciate the work that goes into the production of a fine blade, my employment being in the field of engineering. I think that's also a reason that this method means such a lot to so many privileged users - it's not meant to be easy!

I just about remember my grandfather using a cutthroat blade - a fascination in itself. Now to relive that experience, the preparation, the fragrances, the trepidation, the sensation of steel on skin and the smoothness of the result... You know what I mean.

My eighty year-old father's first words to me the other day - "how are you getting on with that razor?". Need I say more....?

this place has made all the difference for me, but i ask a lot of question in whatever i do so i would advise you to do the same.
my simple advice is:
-good prep is key
-pay attention to angle
-pull the skin as taught as you can
-don't use too much pressure as very little is needed

i really enjoy shaving for the relaxing concentration aspect and the great shaves.

i hope you get as much out of it as i do!

i am a huge motorcycle fan!!! the pic on my avatar (if you can't recognize it) is colin edwards on the Aprillia Cube when it set fire at 160mph. just a great pic. i have a custom Harley Sportster i built from the ground up that is really close to being finished, and an SV650 track bike that i may put back on the road as i really don't have time or money right now to get to the track. my street bike was a GS500E that i did a bunch of custom work to but i recently sold it.

so are you a biker? what kind of bike do you have? are you into watching the races? (i am a rabid fan :D)

oh, and this is all off topic but i don't care :rock:

Great to have yet another member from sunny England! Our numbers continue to grow! There is a huge amount of information here. You can get by with a small proportion of it but it get's kind of addictive & you keep wanting to know more about all aspects of shaving with a straight!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Bought another razor today:rofl2: from an antique err junk shop. Just five quid (seven and a half of your bucks!!) just to practice stropping and all things maintenanace. The scary part was that this guy had a drawer full of them :cry:. I might go back after a bit more research around these parts...

Ben, it's good to know that there's a strong UK representation here. Any gatherings/ fairs that you know of?

Chee - I have a gsxr1000 (super machine with trouser-moment acceleration) and I ride an emergency services courier bike BMW R1150RT(P) with full blues and twos for a voluntary charity service to our hospitals. All good fun!

Now, excuse me while I have a look around the forum for anything that looks remotely like what I've seen today. Take care -and stick to the grey bits Chee...

Eeek! Scary - straight razor and Beemer appreciation society (though I would warn that the big boxers are still a bit 'agricultural' imho). Was in Birmingham jewellery quarter today too, on another mission. Anywhere you'd recommend 'browsing' for new or used shave stuff?

LOL I know theyre a bit agricultural but Im done with going silly fast on two wheels just want something with a bit of character to plod around on :)

I dont know any good browsing places as such, there is a house clearance/junk stall in the rag market that seems likely to me but Ive yet to catch him with any straights though he had a dirty old brush for sale last time I was there :eek:, Ive tried a couple of antique/junk shops with no luck. Best bet IMO is the car boot sales through the summer but thats not everyones cup of tea, lot of effort if youre not a boot sale browser already, otherwise just keep your eyes peeled for junk shops when youre out and about.

For new, there is a tobacconist in the Great Western Arcade (Hollingsworth), middle of Brum that has a few Dovos in the window and some soaps but his razor prices are out of my league and Im mostly interested in old stuff, my budget is small and I just like old things!
