Please help! Trying to buy my first straight razor.

Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is answered somewhere else and if it is, please post a link. I'm really interested in straight razor shaving, but I have no idea which razor to buy. I've seen all sorts from all different companies, new and old. I'm currently using a '58 Gillette Super Speed to wet shave, so I'm going to need the strop, whetstone, and blade. Does anyone have any good recommendations for these products? I don't want to break the bank with this purchase but I also want something I can enjoy and use for at least the next few years. Thanks for all your help!

Go look in the classifieds. You'll find razors there that are shave ready. Not all are, so make sure it is with the seller. If you do that you'll not need the stone initially. The fact you're already familiar with the principles of a proper wet shave is great! A real headstart!
Tony Miller does a good starter strop. Don't spend loads, as you're gonna nick it while learning, but it has to be a proper strop, so no ebuy junk.

Welcome to SRP. Here is some stuff to read and here are some videos that will help get you started. Forum member Kenrup was selling starter kits. I guess that would be as reasonably priced as you would find. Check the classifieds for an ad or PM him and see if he has anything available. The SRP Wiki has a list of razors to avoid. You might take a look at that. :gl:

+1 with all the above! You also need some shave soap/cream. Lot's of sources for those. My favorites are the soaps from Colleen (The Gentlemens Quarter). Mama Bear also has some great soaps and creams. She has a big following here. Look in the Vendors corner.

You don't need the hone right away, but will eventually.

I would highly suggest contacting KenRup. Got my first from him and it is still my most comfortable shaver. All other suggestions are right on. Keep what you are using now. The learning curve for str8s can be long and your face may need a rest at first. Also recommend Tony Miller strops. He offers a pratice strop with some and in my opinion and experience it is money well spent. Enjoy the journey!!! Welcome.
