First Square Point Shave
I've been shaving with a str8 for about 2 mos. but only with round points. I have a 5/8 Henckels Platinum square point that I found in an antique shop, cleaned, and sent out for honing. That wicked square point made me a little nervous as I considered it digging into my ear lobes, cheeks, and other fleshy bits.
Well, it turned out to be no big deal. Yeah, I kept a close eye on the square point and shaved a little slower than usual, but there were no incidents. It was perfect for trimming my sideburns and moustache.
Oh, BTW, the stories you hear about Henckels are true. They are excellent blades.

Great to hear it. The fear of spikes really is overblown among new straight shavers, myself included. I anticipated the same things, but ended up shaving with a spike out of the gate and haven't looked back in almost four years.

I'm always poking my earlobes with my Wapi*, and no Van-Gogh syndrome yet! :w
(*Not a real square point, but still sharp up there.)

All I use are square points wouldn't shave with any thing else.

Congratulations on your spike debut!
My spikepoint is still in the drydock.. Its also a Henckels by the way. I'm really looking forward to shaving XTG under my nose with that thing..

I'll still get careless sometimes and nick my earlobe a bit when I use my square-point Wester Bros., but even so, I love the bit of extra control I seem to get from that lovely right angle.

I have round points in my mind as a bit of a trainer blade, which is no doubt unfair. I think it's just because they always get recommended to guy's as their first blade. Aesthetically, they're definitely my least favourite.

Really a big fan of the square points for their look and ease in knowing where it'll cut for detail work around hairlines if your keeping some facial hair. And I've only nicked my earlobe once so far.... start getting a little faster stop paying as much attention *poke* tiny tiny pin prick but its the ear.... blood everywhere horrible memories of my mother trying to cut my hair as a child surfacing....
Oh right I did buy a styptic pencil *dab* problem solved :p

congrats on a good shave i bought a spike a while back to learn to hone on and finally shaved with it the other day and i could shave just as well with my round in tight areas so basically its just a matter of what you like better as long as it will shave good i dont care what kind of point it has on it:D
