How does this site work?

First, what is a "thread"? Is it a subject here? Please excuse my ignorance because this is my first time trying to communicating in a forum.

I do have a question. I have a new Fromm razor which I thought was an adequate razor brand. When I tried to use it for the first time, I trashed my face. I'm pretty sure I wiped out any edge it originally had by the wrong stropping first, and then by a botched attempt to hone it. I used what appeared to be a marble stone I bought from a pawn shop years ago. On the bottom of the stone's wood base, it says Wyostones.tripod.com. Any info on this stone? I'm ready to try honing it again with my recently purchased Norton 250/1000 and 4000/8000. Should I start with the 250 and work up to a final polish with the 8k? Is the 250/1000 too much? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Use a pyramid with the 4k/8k stone and that should do it.

what I am writing back and all other correspondences inside this thread are called posts... A group of similar threads are a sub forum as in this is the "Newbie Forum" all those grouped together, make up the greater forum SRP......

As to the Newer Fromm razors, they will take an edge, and hold an edge, however they ain't the easiest razor to hone by a long shot.....

as far as honing goes, it takes some practice but the equipement you bought will work great (i have both those stones :D). check out the Wiki articles and the videos. heavydutysg135 has some great videos. another recommendation is to buy Lynn's DVD as it is supposed to be great, i really want to buy it, but haven't yet, which is probably why it took me a while to get the hang of things :D.

i wouldn't touch the 220 side. was the razor sold to you Shave Ready? if not i would go at the 1k side until you have a nice and even bevel set along the whole edge of the razor, if it was then go to the 4k side and go until it passes the HHT ( i know a lot of people will say they don't like this one but i do) without making a ping sound. then the 8k to polish things up. for me i usually do about 100 laps on the 8k but there isn't a truly correct number. after that strop the heck out of it and shave test to see where your at. one thing to note is that the 1k laps are a bit more forgiving but once you hit the 4k and 8k it makes a big difference when you really keep the pressure light.

*#NOTE#* did you lap those hones? if not then they must be lapped before use. there are many threads on here you can search for on how to lap them.

if you are patient and ask lots of questions here everything will go very well, that's what i did.

I would say that they might take an edge.......hold an edge is ?????

use at least 3 layers of tape it may take an edge to hold it how long can't answer.:gl:

Welcome to SRP!

I really wouldnt try to hone your own razor if you are not comfortable with shaving with a straight. You cannot tell if the shave wasnt good because of your technique or because of your honing skills..

Just send it to somebody listed in the classifieds and get it professionally honed..
the when you are comfortably shaving could try to tough it up when it needs it. You should be able to feel if razor is sharp enough to shave with by then..

To flatten them, by rubbing them on a lapping plate, or flattening stone, again the Wiki is yer friend first.... Then refer back here with anything yer not sure of....

Lapping is the process of flattening the surface of the hone. It's done to eliminate the possible hills and holes in the plane of the hone's surface that would tend to unevenly abrade the edge of the tool being sharpened by providing only point contact. It's felt that the surface of even a factory new hone will need lapping to make that surface true and flat so that the honer will have the "edge" in making his edge true and uniform.

the first time i lapped mine i used a progression of 320, 600 then 1000 grit wet dry sand paper. i drew a grid with pencil on the hone surface and lapped until it was gone on each grit. use a bristle brush and water to clean the surface between each grit. i soaked the paper in water for about 10 mins before i used it and i placed it on a piece of glass.

Welcome to SRP, Jim,

I agree with Maarten. You have enough to learn with straight shaving and stropping. Learn honing later. Send your razor to a hone meister, then you'll only be dealing with 2 variables instead of 3.

I'm in Pendleton, if you're on the Dry Side, let me know if I can help. There are many members on the Wet Side. I don't hone (yet), I send my razors to GSSIXGUN. He's in the NW and I highly recommend him.
