new to straight shaving with lots of Q;s

so here is the thing i buy a new razor with some research tryin to find a reasonably priced new razor which is supposed to be shave ready until it literally rips the hairs off of my face :-( needless to say i was very unhappy. i should have done research for honing as well. my problem now is that i would like to hone or strop or well pretty much anything to get my brand new straight razor shave ready and would like to learn for myself....but where do i start i have a leather/linen strop no honing stone with stropping paste and thats it.......any ideas??????? and thank you ahead of time any advice would be very much greatly appreciated......

There's a lot of learning involved before you can hone a razor to shave readiness. It's not a great idea to attempt it on your first & only new blade, plus the stones are an investment. Why don't you consider sending it to one of the honemiesters in the classifieds? Where are you based?

+1 on sending it out to get honed..

What kind of razor did you get?

A razor and a strop is ll you need to get started as soon as your razor is shaveready..
What did you do to prep your beard? did you use regular soap/cream or "canned goo"? beard prep is very important.

Where did you get your razor? +1 with the above on sending it out. The last thing you need is to add another variable and skill set to learn (honing). I sent mine out for honing, and so glad I did. Check the classifieds for a honemeister, or see if someone in your area will help you.

Another suggestion is purchase a copy of Lynn's CD. It contains over 3 hours of priceless information about most aspects of straights, including shaving... :gl:

You may want to start by reading the sticky post at the top of this section and the links in there. The other threads in this section will probably convince you to concentrate on shaving for now.

Welcome to SRP having your bladed hone by someone who knows what they are doing is a good way to know what a sharp blade should be. +1 on everyone who suggested it. You will need a strop for now and thats about it. And remember to give yourself time there is a learning curve for sure with a straight razor. Use this site to help there is tons of great knowledge here and look in the wiki it will help. :gl:

Welcome to SRP! The SRP Wiki at the toolbar above to the left has great tutorials to get you going on all things straight razor related.

Send your razor out to a honemiester . It will give you something to shave with and a benchmark to judge your own efforts when you hone.

IMO the Norton starter set with the flattening stone and the 1kl, and 4/8 combo stone is great for beginning.

If you are going to learn to hone your own get some cheap ebay or antique shop razors. Don't start with you shave ready razor. :gl:

ya newguy. best of luck with the shaving. definatly read the wiki and get all the gear you need my razor was pretty rough on me until i honed it. i honed mine myself but i watched alot of honing videos. and ive got previous sharpening exprerience with knives/chainsaws and just and unhealthy fixation on sharp things.:rock:

LI is a big place. Earthdawn is on Long Island, maybe you guys are close enough to get together. I'm sure there are others in your area but I am not sure who. A good Honemeister is as close as your mail box. +1 on going to them to get your blade shave ready in ED isn't available. Read the stickies in the Newbies corner and go trough hthe WIKI as mention by the great guys above. :gl:
