NO SOUTH PAW'S HERE!

Ok I'm a total newb only 13 or 14 shaves down on a ST8 so I'm 100% positive I'm doing this wrong, but I get the job done np. No cuts and getting a decent shave.

I DO NOT USE MY LEFT HAND AT ALL.

I just can't be ambidextrous with metal on my face. I just found a way to shave with my right hand only. So baring any shark attacks to my right arm Im good, but I don't use the Southpaw at all.

Ok so I want to know who else does one handed jobs only? I don' t mean for those moments when you take adavantage of yourself ( buy yourself dinner and a nice bottle of wine, and well you expect yourself to put out)

Lots of us shave one-handed.It's just a matter of getting a comfortable grip you can use to safely get the job done.

I use both hands to shave, but check out this thread/video, it seems relevant. :)

I think its harder to only use one hand, even if I do only one stroke with the left hand it counts. But, you can do it anyway you like. Many prefer single handed shaving. I can do it too, but there are a few places that still challenge me. At some point you may discover the need to run the blade in a position, and direction, that simply prevents using your right hand. Don't let your self-imposed rule today hold you back tomorrow.

The only thing I always use my left hand for is the ATG on the left side of my face. For the left side ATG and XTG, I can use either hand. It really depends on the razor (how it feels in my hand) and what kind of mood I'm in.

I really think that all aspects of shaving technique are "do whatever feels good and works well."

I guess I hadn't really thought much about it before , but I never do use my right, only my left. Makes for some uncomfortable stretches with the skin-tightening hand while shaving under the jawline, but I'd sooner do that than trust a razor in my right hand!

Do whatever works for you, always!

I use two hands myself, using one single grip.

I'm a southpaw and usually shave with just the left. However; when I started out I was using the switch shaving and I tore my face up big time. I won't be trying it anytime soon I assure you!

igitur55 and jmueller8, I'm glad to see other one handers out there, and I meant no offense both my dad and my brother are Southpaws. My wife's maiden name in Italian means "left handed" lol

I say "one hander's" unite!

So shave your face while drinking a cup coffee with your other, or doing a shot of whiskey or whatever puts wind in your sails.


I haven't put any hard and fast rules on my shaving, maybe one day I will attempt my lefty pose, but for now I'll be using it to type my posts here whilst shaving.

Actually, I use my left for 90% of the shave, only using my right for the WTG pass on the right hand side.


With a DE though, strictly left hand.

I also use my left primarily, but there are some situations where I will guide the toe with my right hand. I'm not sure if it's because I'm using my left hand, or if it is just the way the hair grows, but the two hardest spots for me to get smooth are the right side of my jaw and the right side of my neck.

I just started with this, but I use mostly my right hand. I used both hands for the first shave, but didn't like it all that much. I usually shave the left side of my face WTG with my left hand, but when it comes to riskier passes like ATG and XTG I need to use my dominate hand or things skip like crazy.

I used to use 1 hand. Then I said forget it I am tired of the rough patches and made myself use both hands.

Life is much better now.

I said this in another post and it is still true:

In other words forget about handedness and just shave. Do what it comfortable. If that means shaving on your head while your cat licks your feet then do it.

BTW I am left handed.

I also tried to use both hands, but kept razing myself along the left jawline. I eventually realised that I didn't need to because my beard was light enough on the sides to avoid a WTG pass all together. Now I do this:

You'll get the hang of it; but, like everyone says here: "Don't expect to be a pro overnight!" I, just yesterday, realized that I was still stropping at a bit of an angle so that the tip of my blade was not getting stropped as well; thus, I had to change my technique again. :shrug:

I'm sure even the senior members here evolve their techniques as well!

Jmueller, Ha indeed! Well, I do have an extremly rough and thick beard, think jesus's beard on steroids. I'd say more coarse thick hairs then dense, but it is very dense too compared to 90% of people. I find that its the angles of my face and learning the correct pose for each feature and the funny faces I need and do make to get the right touch that makes me stay one handed. I can't seem to get my left hand to cooperate with me on these endeavors so I use my righty and extend his use a little further. I may one day use my left, like I said before nothing is carved in stone, however I do feel comfortable this way.

Xman, great vids, and great links on critical thinking. I was having this discussion with a friend about brain teaser I was asked once. If you have only number 0-9 to use, and these numbers must be places on two dies, which numbers would you need to have on each die in order to fulfill an entire 31 day calendar? I was actually asked to solve this on a job interview that last 5hrs whilst standing up in front of a group for an IT company. lol

I actually had one of my best shaves today. I used two razors ( I got the idea from Xman's vid) I started with my Wapi with Violet scales,then I moved onto my FW Engels for some edging and trime work. I did great until my 15 month older daughter pushed the bathroom door open, and I gave myself a nice little face slice, luckily some Alum healed it nicely and I added neosporin as an after effect, its hardly noticeable, but that was my first cut from a straight so far.
