Nooby college student

Hi!

My name's Adam, I'm a Hungarian student studying in Sewanee, TN. I'm a sophomore Econ/Theatre major.
This is my first time in the world of wet shaving. I've been using electric the whole time, and it just doesn't cut it.

I've bought two Kropps from portal5, got me a strop, Pirate's Cove soap, a badger brush, and I'm looking for a nice lil' mug. I'm currently looking through the classifieds for any good deals that I can afford on my budget.

This place is great! I'm looking forward to learning a lot from you all!

It looks like you got a good setup to get you started.. I dont use a mug but a simple bowl I got in Portugal for "caldo verde" works for me..

Never got anything from portal5. Are they shave ready? Sounds like you're set to go! I don't use a mug. Just not got one as yet. I lather in a bowl.

I lather on my face. If I use a cream I put it on the brush and the brush will spread it on the face, creating a lather in the process. if I use a soap I create the lather in the plastic saop bowl that came with the soap (Colleen's soap at the moment).

I would save my pennies for a hone. You'll want one sooner or later.

I use a mug that I bought at the Dollar store, for only $1.13 CAD, you can't beat the price. It works well too, it's deep and has a wide opening on it.

As for the Kropps, I haven't got them yet. I must add that portal5 was VERY helpful as a seller. He describes his razors as not shave ready.

I've a friend here who works in the college machine shop and he said he'll hone stuff for me if needed.

I got my first shave with a Sheffield George V Crown extra hollow ground razor today. I grew pale for a sec when I did a successful hanging hair test on it.
I did my cheeks, chin, and the coup de maitre. A few nicks here and there, and a longer one that bled a bit on my chin. Cold water, then styptic pencil.
It was a glorious sense of pain.
Jokes aside, my first shave got more hair off my face than my electric ever did in 2 years. I feel like this was one of my best decisions ever. I am looking forward to it so much.

I used Neutrogena shave cream, as my brush is not here yet... I hope I'm going to feel less drag next time. I want to get into stropping, holding the razor properly and confidently by the time my brush gets here.

Just for laughs, my right side is a lot smoother than my left. I guess that shows how dominant my right hand is.

I can't wait for tomorrow so I can shave again. :D

Do not take a razor to someone in a machine shop. They might be great at sharpening plane blades and other tools but the methods and hones used are not the same. Unless your friend has honed lots of straight razors, which is extremely unlikely, don't let him even touch them. If you do, you will be sorry...and in need of a new razor.

Haha, yeah, I see your point there. I was gonna make sure he can actually hone blades in the first place.
Otherwise, I guess I'll have to look for the nearest honemeister.

Come to think about it, my dad knows a really good one back home...

People that think they can actually hone razors are responsible for all the ****ed up blades I get and then have to spend hours fixing.

But really, the guy my dad knows should be legit and fine. I'll just have my blades honed over when I'm gong back.

Yup, people are really tip-top here when it comes to helping out.

Anyways, I forgot that I was going to have a stage makeup exam today. :gaah: Ironically, the day's project was crepe hair.

I made a mustache starting from under my nose and curling it up to my sideburns. My hair grows in a funny pattern that I just had to follow with the fake stuff. When I was done, my prof said I looked like a muppet. I was almost "car-crash handsome", as some people stared me out so hard in the streets that they had to make sudden corrections while driving.

I kept it on for April Fool's day's sake, and lemme' tell you, taking it off was painful.

Moral of the story: do not apply spirit gum to face after first straight-shave.

Yay, I got my brush!
It felt so much better than the cream... I could actually shave my neck! The cream was dragging too much.

One of my Kropps has "Saturday" engraved on the back. I dunno, I think it's cute.
