I finally found a way to enjoy shaving

New here, wanted to say hello. I always hated shaving, my face would burn and hurt, so i went out on the net to find a better way and that led me here. I kinda jumped in with both feet, bought a Monsieur Charles disposeable blade about 2 weeks ago and did a full shave with it first try. No bad cuts thanks to the great info I found ehre, but did get some razor burn in the normal place, not as bad but was there. A quick search on this site and I learned I was using a little too much pressure, problem solved and I had the best shave ever the next day, no razor burn, awesome. This is so much fun I wish I could shave 2-3 times a day, hehe.

Well, I shaved for a whole 3 days before I got bit by the bug. I was talking to my grandfather about shaving with the straight and he gave me his grandfather old straight razor, has his initials scratched in the scales. I ordered the norton 1000/4000 and 4000/8000 hones and began reading everything i could about honing and restoring an old razor. I am very thrilled to say this morning I got to shave with my great great grandfathers stright razor and that was just an outstanding feeling to me.

Thanks for the great information/education guys and especially for turning the most dreaded part of my morning into something i enjoy and look forward to.

that is great! i was another one who hated shaving prior to the straight razor. i have since used a DE and i don't mind them, but the SR is for me. i have the same set up as far as hones and really like them. any pictures of the razor?

Welcome. I have hated shaving for years. Started with a Sensor excel, moved from there to mach 3, and later fusion. On and off for the last 10 years I have grown the beard, sometimes to mountain man proportions because I hated it so. Started using a DE last year; much better, was starting to enjoy shaving, but it just wasn't enough. Switched to straights two weeks ago. Will NEVER look back. Congrats on the heirloom. I could not even get an old DE from any of my relatives, most haven't used one in ages, and I don't think anyone in my family is in possession of a straight. This forum is awesome. I spend more time on here than any other website. Keep reading and keep enjoying.

Yes, welcome. My experience exactly. Except for the bit about the heirloom. Very cool, I envy you. Pictures would be nice (please).

I will get some pics soon, trying to get a picture of my great great grandfatherso I can make a glass display case for this razor with his photo. The razor is stamped John Weis on one side and C.S.P.K trademark on the other. Is this a pretty good razor? Even after sitting in a cigar box for 70+ years it still had a good edge on it, would shave hair off my arm, and I have it sharp enough to shave now, but it does pull just a little so not quite there. I think it will be a good shaver once I learn to get a sharper edge on it.

Ok, now this has been so great for me to have an heirloom like this I want to get a nice razor and get it personalized so hopefully someone in my family will be shaving with it in a hundred years. I was thinking of getting the dovo Bizmark in bone handles, then getting Semper Fi and my name engraved on the handles, maybe laser engraved unless there is a better way. I was thinking of trying to get a scrimshaw like look. I will try to attach photos I made to give you and idea of what I am thinking of, but they are both of the same side of a razor. What would be the best way to get a nice scrimshaw type look, laser engraving or is there some other technique maybe a jewelry store can do? I never had anything engraved before.

Oh, and one other update. I wear a flat top and when I used to get my hair cut off base in Thurmont, MD the guy there would shave my head with a straight razor. Last night I decided to try it myself. It scared the crap outa me, but I did manage to survive. Had to use the disposeable straigh though, mine just wasn't quite sharp enough. only niced myself twice, right behind the ear in the exact same spot on both sides. I have cut my own hair for years so I was used to holdingf a mirror in my habd for that, but doing the back with the stright was a real challenge.

Anyway thought I would let you know it can be done, heh. My uncle used to run a barber school and he said there was no way I could shave my own head with a razor, guess I took that as a challenge.

yea, I'll pass on that one. I am willing to risk a lot in the name of fun and all, but you do that and you are a braver man than me.

So what do you think of the engraved scales idea with my name and all. I have to admit part of me likes it, but I am afraid it just will not look right on the actual razor.

I think it could look nice, but I personally would try to keep it more elegant looking. What I mean is a more subdued engraving. I think that is what you are thinking, but the picture with black font seems to flashy to me. Just engraved, maybe smaller on the font and it's better. Probably best to use less of the space. IMHO, that is.

I could not find my camera, but I put the razors in my scanner and got a descent image. The bottom razor was his main razor and has his initial scratched on it. It was in great shape and all have not polished it. The top one was rusted pretty bad and I had to get the dremel out and sand it down. Havent shaved with the top one yet, it has a slight smile to it and I had some trouble learning to sharpen that one. I hope these pics aren't too large, I do not seem to be able to reduce the photot after I have insertesd it and may have to go back and reduce the original.
