Just wondering when it is a good time to hone. I've been shaving for 8 months with a straight razor. Also wondering when I should add something to my strop to soften it up? Any help would be really appreciated.

Whenever you feel your razor is not as sharp as it was. 8 months seems a very long time for a razor in use to stay sharp.
Same goes for the strop. Add the yellow paste when you start seeing it degrade. If there is nothing wrong with it then you don't need to paste it :p
Does the razor still shave comfortably with no pulling? Depending how often you shave with it and the condition of the blade, it may just need a touch up on a pasted strop/barber hone, or it may be time to send it to Lynn for a nice fresh edge. You be the judge. Jeremy-
