YET ANOTHER new guy, looking for some pointers

Thanks for all of the information and service you provide. A life-long (well... since puberty :rofl2:) wet-shaver, I have been plagued with sensitive skin coupled with a tough, wiry beard. Quite the unfortunate combination. The space-aged cartridge razors have never done the trick but due to lack of time or effort or investigation or some combination of the three, I never found a another alternative until I stumbled upon this site.

So what I am looking for is an inexpensive (under $50) beginner's straight razor. I have already read all of Lynn's newbie forum posts and I am ordering the other essentials (strop, soap, etc), but I would like some pointers or the links themselves to some good deals on a quality straight. If you are in the classifieds and you have a good suggestion, please let me know and I'll take your word for it.

I would suggest to watch the classifieds and look at the "quality" and the "shave-readiness". After that, maybe a quick post for a response from the pros and then buy it quick.

This one went up this weekend... It looks great, but I don't know anything about the brand. The fact that it's shave ready is a plus.

This one looks good and is in my price range. From thie pictures it looks pretty clean and is advertised as shave ready.

Any experts care to offer a quick opinion before I snatch this one up?

This one looks nice.. Any pros at SRP want to offer an opinion or advice before I snatch this one up?

I picked up this razor after a PM conversation with the seller. I'm confident that my SR experience is going to be good.

Nice razor, at a great price, from a very well respected member. If you have any problems, you can pretty safely rule out the razor or the edge on that one!
It's nice to start with something like that, as now any changes that have to be made....you will know...they are in technique or prep.
Good luck, and enjoy it! Remember that there is a learning curve, but taking it slow means it does NOT have to be painful, and the rewards are worth it!!! (even if it can be a little humbling at first.)

I dont know the brand of your new razor but you bought it from a great guy that helps out newbs (like me ) a lot with honing razors.. so if he tells you its a great shaver.. its a great shaver.. just watch that spike point because it will be sharp.. earlobes don't like sharp.:w

I had a perpetual rash from twin blades on the right side of my neck from about 1970 until last December, when I started str8 shaving. There's no going back for me.

Shave slowly, use no pressure, keep the blade angle under 30 degrees, and shave for comfort. Get in the habit of good beard prep and face stretching. Start off easy, just the cheeks WTG, until your confidence grows. Then add more area, then XTG and ATG. It's a skill to be learned, but it can be learned.

Oggie, I don't think advice on any particular razor name (Boker, Sheffield, etc...) is very useful at this point for you. There are several good buys already pointed out to you in our classfieids. Something like a 5/8 or 6/8 round point is a good razor to start with. Round points are generally a bit more forgiving than a spike point, but many of our members started with spike points so they can be used. Just remember there are no beginner straight razors. They don't sell them with training wheels. It's either a straight razor or it isn't. Kenrup (a member here) sells excellent starter sets too. Wherever you decide to purchase your razor, ensure it comes shave ready. :tu

Dan, thanks for the pointers. I've already picked up a good looking blade from hi_bud_gl and it comes shave ready. I guess what I meant by "beginner" razor was just something in the "starting out" price range. The one I picked up was around 50 bucks and judging by what hi_bud_gl put in the ad (which has since been removed) it should be a winner. Here's the description:

Oggie, Im sure if you bought this razor from someone on the fourm
it will be a good st8 . As far as shops if you like (AOS) ART OF SHAVING
stuff ther are 2 stores in phila
1) 1528 walnut street
2) king of prussia mall
other then that try some beauty supply stores . Most of them carry a small section of mens stuff

Awesome... thanks. I will definitely check out the one on Walnut. I'm actually in Cherry Hill, Bob, but I put "Metro Philly" because I'm essentially suburbian Philly and it's easier for the folks who aren't from the area :)

In NJ a AOS store in paramus and in atlantic city
I go to the one in AC .Nice store a little pricey on hardware but soaps are good price and they smell great.
