I just wanted to start out by saying hi!! I found this sight through a customer who came into my shop for a hair cut and said he found some good reviwews about my shop on this site.. Ive i've been doing shaves now for almost 2 years and i love it!! so if ur in AZ and looking for a good shave let me know!!!

It's always nice to see people revive the lost art of barbering. And, of course, your professional expertise will always be welcomed here; feel free to comment on any given situation as you stand on a position that none of us, or at least, not most of us are acquainted with.
And I stress Leighton's question: do you use disposables or real live straight razors that are sinister and creepy? ;)

Thanks guys!! i'm at a shop called Floyds I'm at the one on the I-17 and Thunderbird, :: Floyd's 99 Barbershop ::, we use disposable razors... wich is kewl, but i wish we used the real deal.. But it's sanitary and keeps people from freaking out!! lmao!! And plus then we always know we have fresh sharp blades!! but as of Sunday i will be a proud owner of a real razor!!!

No we cant use the real razors on clients... i am just excited to get one!! maybe ill try it on my legs or something!! :hmmm: if u ever need a cut let me know!! i can get u a first time clients free hair cut!!

I actaully didnt buy one... my client who told me about this site is gonna bring in a couple from his collection and let me choose one!!!! : - ) im really excited!!

i know right?!?! i have two razors right now that have the disposible blades, and chosing those ones took forever!!! ya... im totally hooked!!!!

Now can you shave somebody with their own razor if they bring it in? I was told yes by barbers in nevada and California. I don't know if it is state to state though.

Thanks for all the welcomes!! im pretty sure you could have your own razor used on you.. proably would just be up to the baber.. some might be used to a certain weight of a razor or something, but if someone came in with there own and wanted me to use it on them i would!!!!

I see you are a fan of Vintage VWs. One of my favorite cars was a 1967 Karman Ghia. Red. A poor man's Porsche 356C. Long since in VW Valhalla. I had it while in college where the winter temps went to -20F almost on a daily basis. How I wished it had a better heater!

I can't remember off the top of my head what blades i am using right now.. they are russian i think??? i will look when i go to work on saturday and PM you!! and yes i am a diehard volkswagen junky!!! 1969 bus was my first car about 9 years ago, and next week i will be the proud owner of a 1971 fast back!!! i will send ya some pics when i get them!!

So it looks as if under AZ law that you CAN use a real straight.
You just need a dry sanitizer and some barbicide, or you can use a Feather type razor.
I may move to AZ!!:shrug:
There is a place in Paradise Valley that uses real straights. My friend goes there, they charge $20. Not bad at all.Quote:

I just think everyone is misinformed in my shop.. one person tells you yes you can us a real one, and then the others say no... im confused!!! i would definetly us a real one!! first i would like to try it out a few times though just to get the pressure and everything right!! Then maybe offer clients wich they would rather have me use?!? I dont mind using dispposables since the shop provides the blades!! and also just for a FYI the shaves at my shop are $24.oo i think its very resonable!! i used to work somewhere and shaves STARTED at $50.00!!!!!!!!! oh and all the shaves at the shop are given by girls (which aren't hard on the eyes!!!) :D We don't have any male barbers at the moment...Quote:

The guy who introduced to to this site goes by gatorfan.... he has only been in to the shop once for a hair cut. Hopefully he doesnt mind me mentioning his name!!!!!!
I must admit, I was actually concerned with what would happen if someone was cut. After reading some sterilization threads and looking up what barbicide kills...apparently there isn't anything to worry about. That stuff kills HIV and hep. Add the fact that steel is generally inhospitable to nasties and... its a pretty sterile instrument. You can wipe it down with alcohol to physical remove most of whatever is on the blade, then soak it in barbicide to kill the rest. Rotate between razors and your G2G!
Barbercide does kill all germs!!! honestly i just think people these days are super paranoid!!!! so my client came in and brought me 2 razors!!! they are awesome!!! im soooooo excited!! he also brought me a strop that he made!!! how awesome is that?!?! so i think i will just use them on people i know!! can't wait!!!

Yes learning to hone is key if you are going to use a real straight your razors will get a lot more use than the average user (that is if you can use them in your shop and lets hope that you can) Once you get to use them you will probably never go back and then you will have all the business and have to get razors for the other ladies there (I see this turning into a great shop) I do hope you enjoy your new razors and the ones you will get in the future (it will happen)
I am lucky I can get a real straight shave from a barber for $8 where I live :D
