Thanked: 0Thanks guys I know that most of what I asked is subjective. I remembered reading about the alum bar but forgot to order it.
The order I placed last week showed up todayso tonight I attempt to shave my side burn area.
I will check the SOTD section.

Thanked: 171I started with only a cold water splash and witch hazel, and that was great, but now I do a cold water splash, alum block, let it sit a minute, another cold water splash and then witch hazel, wait another minute, and then either AS, AS milk, or ASB depending on my mood.
I can't go without the alum block now. It's a great tool to stifle light cases of would-be irritation, and also tells you exactly how well you did or didn't shave each area of your face.

If you like WH allot, you might look at the AS's with WH in them, i.e. Musgo Real Splash and Ogalalla Bay Rum Splash. As Gugi mentioned, not a perfect science, really depends on what you like.
If you find yourself digging the Bay Rum, there's a sticky around here that lists a large variety of them and how they stack up against each other. Believe gssixgun (Glen) put this together and it has grown from there.
Enjoy.

Just a cold water splash, AS, then some moisturizer with SPF for my Nordic pale skin.

I just do a cold water rinse, leave the water on and rub the alum block around my face. I let the alum sit for a minute or two then rinse my face again with cold water and apply nivea after shave balm. Then I let the after shave sit on my face for a couple of minutes to dry then apply my face cream.
I didn't use to use the alum block since I have sensitive skin, but I find it works really well as long as I don't leave it on my skin for too long.
