I'd love to hear about your experiences as a southpaw using a straight razor. I just bought a dovo shaverette, which uses replaceable blades, to start off with and I'm having a bit of trouble, as expected for a newbie. I'm just wondering if there are any other lefties that found it to be a little challenging to make the switch?

There are loads of guys who advocate shaving using both hands, not just your dominant. Infact, I would go as far to say that more use two hands than one.
Welcome Lefty; I found it difficult at first then I came across some left handed razors. :rofl2::rofl2::roflmao:roflmao

I'm a lefty, but I'm yet to give myself a straight razor shave - can't find a decent razor in my city for love or money, so I'm still stuck with a cartridge razor *shudders*. That said, however, I'm somewhat amibedextrous, so once I find a decent one and I'm comfortable using my left hand with it, I'll be starting to try using my right hand. I foresee a few nicks, but hopefully it'll be easier than reaching across my face.
Left handed razors eh? Sounds like part of a comedy routine. of course we all know western razors are ambidextrous. Traditional Japanese Razors are right handed.
To tell you the truth being left handed (as I am) is an advantage because we live in a right handed world and most lefties can do way more with their right hand than most right handed people can do with their left. I use both hands in shaving and always did from the outset. But if you don't I don't see it being any different then a right handed person using a straight.
Now using that Japanese razor with your left hand gets way more interesting.

I started using both hands from the beginning. My right hand felt awkward for awhile. ATG on the jawline took the longest.
Just take your time and it will come. :gl:
Honing was a different matter.
It took me forever to find a left handed coti!:D
I'm a lefty also, but I shave with both my left and my right. I definitely have to concentrate a bit more when shaving with my right hand, but it feels normal if less adroit.
I'm entirely a left handed stropper, though. I can't even imagine holding the razor in my right hand to strop it.
I, too, am a leftie, and I haven't yet tried using my right hand for this. I intend to because, shaving the left side of my neck is major trouble! I've figured out some wrist movements that sort of work, but it's just not as easy as the right side. On the other hand... I find that my beard grows in different directions on the left side of my face than on my right! Should I switch hands? or...
Anyway, I'm still trying to work on my quickie-after-the-shower-no-bi-focals allowed-once-down-once-up-walk-away technique, but it may require the ambidextrous approach to make it really work. Time will tell...
I am left handed, but I shave with both and strop left.
I have a Japanese straight and I can tell you that even ambidexterity will not save you. I stood looking in the mirror completely frozen, trying to get my brain around this piece of steel.:confused:
Bizarre is right. JStr8s are an art of themselves simply because you are using an item designed to be used on you by someone else, not to be used by you on you.
I am a leftie but use my right hand for writing and lost of stuff. For shaving and stropping it's only left hand, more dexterity and more assurance.
I have developed a technique and it works fine for me, I have a "goatee" so not to much problem to encounter.

I am right handed, but use both for shaving. I figured that since I was basically learning a new skill, I would teach both hands.
The left hand has cut me more often, but it has smartened up nicely in the past couple of months.
Lefty here! I use both hands for straight shaving. Right hand for left side of face, and left hand for the right.
Another lefty here, though I as well use both hands. Left on left cheek and right neck. Right on right cheek and left neck.

I am a lefty, and I switch back n' forth willy nilly, depending on the angle I can comfortably achieve.
Try not overthinking it, and concentrate on blade angle instead of "oh lord, now I have to switch hands" while shaving. It worked for me.:shrug:
I'm a southpaw, too. I can use both hands, but if things get critical, like the chin or around the mouth, I go with the dominant hand. I need that control, inasmuch as I'm still learning.
I think I'll eventually become very ambidextrous as I gain skill.
