Welcome to SRP! What a great gift from your wife! And a nice setup too!
With regard to keeping your edge sharp, the 4k/8k is not your best bet for this. The 4k/8k is more of a workhorse for sharpening dull razors than for keeping an already sharp razor sharp.
I think most would suggest a barber hone for edge maintenance, because they are realtively inexpensive (on ebay), and work quickly (2-5 strokes) to bring the edge back in line. The only problem is that you can't really buy one new anywhere, so you kind of have to wait to find/win one on ebay. They actually pop up in the classifieds here every so often as well. If you decide on a barber hone and you're in a rush (you needn't be at this point!), you could post a WTB (want to buy) in the classifieds and someone may be able to help you out. Also, I think gugi's suggestion of the naniwa 12k is a great choice here too. It's more expensive than a barber hone, but it's been getting great reviews and will certainly get the job done!
If I were you, the next thing on my list would be a second razor. As soon as you accidentally drop that razor, or whack it on the faucet or something, you'll wish you had a backup! Keep your eyes peeled for a razor that strikes your fancy from the classifieds that is labeled "shave ready."
And stick with it! The learning curve is a little steep, but it's fun too, and before you know it, you'll be getting closer and more comfortable shaves, and enjoying the experience more as well!
