Hello everyone!
I am usnavysubs (or Jeff, as I prefer my first name :) )
I am brand new to the straight razor scene, and am mainly getting into it to get away from all the chemicals used in the shaving process, as well as the skin irritation.
A little background on me...
I am 23 yrs old...my wife and I are expecting our first child(ren) (not sure if its twins or not yet) here in January. I am currently on Active Duty with the US Navy, and I am stationed at Fort Meade, MD.
I am into antique and unique things, as my brand new shaving mug and soap and brush are all handmade by a work at home mom, and are all 100% organic, outside of the badger hair. So..right now I am on a quest to buy some antique razors off ebay or some other vendor, and have them restored by a professional...
Anyways, enough about me... Just thought it prudent to introduce myself before throwing myself into the boards.
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!!

Welcome to SRP Jeff. You might want to check out the classifieds here on SRP for vintage razors. It would be a much better choice than Ebay for a razor. They usually come shave ready and will give you a head start shaving with a straight. Good luck on your new hobby.

Welcome, Jeff! I was in the Navy from 83 to 87.
-
Welcome Jeff . Congrats on your wife maybe haveing twins :tu
-
Yah...we're hoping for it..her numbers (HCG) are off the charts, and right smack dab in the middle range for either a really bad ass singleton, or really strong twins... We're hoping for twins, and so is my mother :-P
Also, hello to all my Navy brethren! I have been in since 2005...I used to be a CT on submarines, and now I am a CT on shore :-P I do a whole lot of work on computer networking, etc. Lots of neat stuff I can't really get into :-P
And finally, thank you everyone so far for welcoming me to the community! I am shocked by the enormous amount of involvement in this forum/website, and you guys have made me feel right at home :)
Thanks and have a great Memorial Day weekend!

another spook
also glad to hear you are a CT, i was also a CTO2 onboard USS DALE, USS CALIFORNIA, we were referred to as the onboard spooks as few knew what we were doing. most of the time was spent at navsecgruact NORTHWEST in virginia.

Yah...NAVSECGRU is all but gone now. I used to be out of VA...recently moved here to MD which I hate by the way... You cant get a concealed weapons permit here, period. Unless you're a jeweler, politician, or police officer. I had one in VA and in CT. My Springfield XD just sits on my nightstand...sad...
Im glad to see someone else here knows what it means to be the boat spook

Welcome Aboard and THANK YOU for your unselfish service. I am An ex Parachute Rigger [ now called Aircrew Survival Equipmentmen }

Welcome to the forum... been here a month... this is a great place to learn from the masters...
The classifieds is a great great place to pick up a vintage shaver for a reasonable price. If you're into antiques and whatnot, it's pretty cool to be shaving with a 100 year old piece of steel, and get better results than what's being sold today! Get yourself a vintage shaver, then all you need is a strop and you're all set!
Also a submariner (or was, I've since switched over to aviation), was on the USS JEFFERSON CITY out of San Diego from '01 to '03... now stationed down in Jacksonville with VP-45... be prepared for some ribbing at work. After my first whole face shave, my Skipper asked me if I got in a fight with a cat...
You're first few shaves are bound to be disappointing and slightly painful. Stick with it, it is worth it!
Cheers,
- HJ

Yeah, I opted out of submarines for another tour because I wanted to wrap up my M.S. and M.B.A. ...cant really do that from the depths... :) I miss it a lot though.
Glad to see so many Navy/Military folks here :)
I am in the process of acquiring some razors (antique/vintage), and will soon be forwarding them off to be restored by some of our community members.
-
hey, before you invest in crumby razors to pay to have restored, which is expensive, you might as well by some that dont need restoration from the calssifieds
just my 2 cents :)
