:chop: Everything tends to be far more difficult when you have kids, especially handsanding a newly aquired G. Wostenholm.
Unfortunately, it would seem lately that my toddler son has found joy in spontaneous screams.
So.... one unnecessary loud noise and one nasty miscaculation later, I am the proud owner of a nasty cut to the tip of my middle finger.
Being new to the world of straight razors means learning new things everyday. I learned new things today.
Anyone else recall there first bad cut?
Haven't had one yet. After a few tours in the Navy though I'm pretty good at ignoring distractions. Lots of little nicks and scratches though.
I HATE cuts on finger tips. It always seems like no matter what I do, I bump them on everything.
I' actually dealing with my first razor related cut other than shaving nicks/cuts. I was too careless passing my razor from my left hand to my right, and instead of landing on the shank, I grasped my razor firmly with the pad of my right index finger on the heel of the blade. :chop:
Discounting my first attempt (unsucsessfull) at straight shaving many years ago, I have learnt to use a straight amongst the screams and shouts of my inlaws. The only space avaliable for my morning shave is in the kitchen where my wifes family likes to communicate by screaming as loud as they can at each other. I think they are in more danger than I am when I have a razor in my hand.
When I first learned to shave with my left hand I was concentrating on one thing and making the pass of the razor from the right hand to the left hand and implanted the blade in the middle of my left thumb. OUCH!!!!
I've had paper cuts worse than anything a razor has given me. :) <Touches wood.>Quote:

I'm pretty good at absorbing distractions, it might be worth having a bit of music on or something so you've always got something running through your mind.
My worst cut was when I was moving to rinse the razor and bringing up my left hand to check smoothness and they had a bit of a meeting in the middle, ah well.
I normally lock my door when I am shaving in the morning or at night. One night my wife went to a friends house and my daughter had been asleep for about an hour. I went in my bathroom and started my shave. I had just completed my first pass and as I set my razor down to relather for a second pass my daughter grabbed the back of my leg and scared the :cen out of me. I was very lucky because I had just set my razor on the counter so there was no cut involved but I make damn sure my door is locked now, or at least shut so no one can come in with out me hearing them. A 4 year old can be very quiet if they want too.:)
I have not had any bad cuts just a few small nicks (ok I may have a little scar from one that might have been more than just a nick but who's counting right):D

Wanted to grab my razor on the shank and had it upside down. So my index finger landed on the blade near the shoulder. SWOOOSH like buttah! Thought clean cuts wouldn't bleed that hard, but there was the old krovvy going drip drip drip.

I'm lucky I have never cut myself with a straight. I'm bragining.
I can't recall exactly how I got my bad cut shaving with a straight razor. Likely just newbie's poor technique.
However, I once got a VERY nasty slice in my index finger when I was having a tough time unwrapping the paper off a DE Merkur safety razor blade.

First and thus far worst cut: I had been hand sanding a junk razor while watching TV, and gently sipping a glass or three of Port. Bowl of water in my lap for keeping the sandpaper wet and catching drips.
Between one sip and the next I glanced down and though "I don't remember spilling port into the water bowl"...
I had given myself an impressive slice across the pad of my thumb, despite the fact that I had knocked the edge off the blade. I didn't even feel it, though the port may be to blame for that :)
What a coincidence that I read this thread this morning... I got my first cut from a straight last night.... While using my new W&B "the celebrated" spike point, it decided to pull off a surpise attack on me. It jammed it's spike into my flesh right below my ear lobe. I felt it sink right it, and it even had the guts to make a nice little "PLINK !!!!!!" sound as I removed it from the inside of my face.
I took 2 deep breaths, got right back on that horse & finished the shave, which ended up being a pretty darn good one, even If the bleeding only stopped well after I applied the aftershave.
A tip to everyone: Don't shave right after your wife proposes something to you that's, uhm, interesting.... I guess being excited is just as dangerous as being in a hurry.
I did the big no-no a few years ago...Dropped a Henkels and sacrificed the body to save the blade from hitting the sink...Cut both hands...deep...ended up looking like mikey mouse walking around with big white bandaged hands for a few days.:boohoo:
My worst so far was a while back, sanding the blade on a W&B whilst sitting on night shift watching tv, as I wasn't paying much attention I got a start when I felt a searing pain in my thumb, upon checking I had removed a lump of flesh from the tip of my thumb :(
