I have read around on the forums, and have seen positive stull about DOVO, and i found a link to a nice razor, but due to past experience of bad internet sells, I would like to get a second opinion on whether this seems like a good buy or not.

looks like a good price compared to others I've seen (and definitely better than what I paid in a local shop today.)
Does it seem to be a legitimate DOVO, or am I being fooled by a copycat version?
I've never used them but Best Grooming is a reputable company who I know others have used. One thing I might add is it states that the razor is "not shave ready" when shipped. You might inquire as to their capabilities to hone this up for you. If they are unable, you will need to send it to someone who can get it up to speed for you. A thought when ordering as several distributors provide this service. Check the vendors section of SRP to find a listing of some of these folks, it will pay off in the end.

Do you want that or a stainless steel version? The one that I am using is a stainless. I have been told that stainless is harder to hone, but does not rust anywhere near as easily as carbon steel does, so the stainless may be worth the extra time and effort fo finding a cadidate and purchase cost.
Actually, probably the carbon, as I want to take the time to make it a full experience, and that includes learning to care for a blade. I will eventually invest in a Stainless blade, but not at the moment.

For another 5 or 10 bucks you can get the same razor from Straight Razor Designs & it will be sharpened by a pro. If you are new at this game, I think that's money very well spent. DOVO is DOVO: it's good quality. I have a DOVO Special 6/8 Faux Tortise which will never leave my rotation - I'm that fond of it.

+1 on getting a Dovo from SRD, It'll be honed proper, and Don and Lynn stand behind everything they sell. I personally don't like Stainless, Carbon is better IMHO. I live in Florida, The humidity capitol of the world...With proper care, rust isn't a problem at all.
I got one there good razor as senior member suggests needs honing!

plus if you need a strop they have razor and strop packages and right now if you buy a razor you get a free voucher for a free honing so its like getting 20 bucks off cuz that is what honing costs. and if you spend 100 you get free shipping...you can tell i took advantage and ordered my second Dovo Renaissance and Premium 1 strop on friday...haha

Excellent razor, but I think the Knife Center can cut the price of the razor by $10 - $15.

Actually, the main benefit of stainless isn't for the cosmetics but to slow down corrosive dulling of the edge. That is caused by the daily immersion in water and lather, plus exposure to acids in the skin and blood. Stropping may remove this microscopic corrosion but the damage to the blade still accumulates over time and eventually dulls the edge. There was a microscopic study done back in the 1930's that indicates that corrosion is the major cause of dulling. Whether this is worth the potentially lower initial sharpness and the slightly increased honing difficulty is an individual decision. That the blade stays nice and shiny is just a secondary benefit.Quote:

Regarding carbon vs. stainless, I've seen tons of threads on the topic, so you might want to do some searching. It seems the quality of the steel is more important than if it is stainess or carbon per se.

I too have a Dovo Renaissance...its my only blade and I liked it so much I bought a second one. I love the stainless because I dont have to worry as much about water...and also I love the size and shape of the blade...not too big and I like the shoulderless blade...nice for shaving around my adams apple. Great blade and boy can Lynn put an edge on a razor.
From a honing and "keeping sharp" perspective, I can recommend Dovo razors. The new ones that have come my way have been straight, well fitted, and take an edge easily.
All the new Dovos are decent straight razors. The different features are personal preferences and it takes experience with different straights before you will figure this out.
Just starting out and becoming fluent in getting a bbs shave or one that satisfies you and caring for the straight razor properly is the learning curve that will concern you the most.
The fairly new Dovo's I have are all good performers. I just rotate them around based upon my personal preferences. Some are nicer to look at than others, some are easier to care for than others, and some hold an edge longer than others. Some need a lighter touch to avoid weepers, and others can take a heavier touch without giving weepers. The shave performance ranges from very well to excellent.
Staight Shaving - in for a penny, in for a pound!

I bought from SRP the DOVO 5/8 inch straight blade with a red 2" strap. i also bought a silver tip brush, and a 10000 grit sand stone. :)
