does anyone here use canned shaving cream? are there any super-premium canned shaving creams that are at least somewhat close in quality to the lather-it-yourself variety? Will I get banned from SRP if I decide to use canned shave cream?!?:w

There's nothing in a can I'm aware of that's anywhere close to a mug & brush cream/soap.
If you're wondering because you don't have a brush, there are some brushless creams that don't lather but are slick enough to get the job done.
I've used American Crew with decent results, and it's not hard to find others. None of the non lathering creams have been as good IMHO, but they're better than cans. As with all things, YMMV
EDIT: I guess one small thing I can say in defense of cans is that when I used them, I didn't do a proper beard prep. That may help if you must use a can.

i was actually gonna do my 1st shave with canned barbasol but was warned not to...later i realized why. my aunt who was taking her test to become a certified barber has practiced SR shaving hundreds of time but when she used canned cream the blood started pouring :chop:...well not too badly. i recommend going to wal mart and pick up a Van Der Hagen mug, soap, brush combo for $8... half of a good shave is a good lather and without the proper set up nicks and discouragement come more frequently. good luck !!!

i have found real shaving soaps to be much better, but if goo in a can is all you can handle, Nivea whips up into a decent lather. but TGQ or tabac is much better
I'm still far from making a premium lather and notice a difference. That and you ever read the label on one of those things? Wow lots of stuff in there. I wouldn't go back myself.
I haven't tried it myself, but I have heard that the Proraso canned cream is the only decent one.

This stuff is cheap and it works fine. I used it for a while before I got a brush (and even with a brush you get a nice lather. In fact, there's a Body Shop in the mall near me so I didn't even have to pay shipping - just went and picked it up.

I honestly - and I mean honestly - do not understand canned shaving foam. It can be used in two ways:
1) Spray it on your hand and it puffs up. Smear it over your face. It doesn't make contact with much of your skin, it hovers over the layer of water and hair tips. Because it doesn't slick to your skin it doesn't do anything. It's useless. :thinking:
2) As above, but massage it into the skin. The foam collapses. It provides some lubrication, but why did you bother buying a foam in the first place? You bought a big can filled mostly with gas to generate the foam, so it cost a fortune and contains little actual product, then you have to destroy the foam that you paid a premium for. :gaah:
I suppose there's a third option: same as (2) but you apply a ton of foam to compensate for what breaks down as you force it onto your skin. The can only lasts a few shaves and the company has made you into a healthy revenue stream. Ah, it's all becoming clear...:hmmm:

Well, we can all admit that canned cream does provide some lubrication, very, very little though. I totally agree that it does not penetrate deep into the beard to give you actual protection, it basically makes things seem more slippery.
My first shave ever was with a can of Mary Kay shaving cream...Of course the shave was bad but the comfort level on a scale from 1-10 was a -10! My face hurt for hrs. I have never gone back and never will. If I'm ever in a position where I have no actual shaving cream or soap, I will gladly use a bar of plain soap over canned cream any day. At least the soap provides an actual cushion for your skin.
All the junk they put in the foam makes it quite abrasive stuff, it will increase your chances of razor burn, dry your skin out and basically make your face feel like it's been dragged through a sand pit.
I know it doesn't seem to do that at the moment, but as soon as you get a brush and cream, you will understand!
Honestly, not recommended here, there are enough cheap brushes, soaps and creams out there to give any one much better bang for their buck lather than any chemical in a can soap ever will.
What exactly do they put in it that makes it abrasive? I agree it is not very useful as a shaving cream, but I don't see how it is abrasive.Quote:

If you buy the expensive neutrogena for men stuff it'll pass. I used the neutrogena for men stuff before I switched and I experimented with it once with the straight. It works. Not as well as brush/soap, but it works fine. It costs more than brush soap though.
brush soap is insanely expensive. the shipping is usually as much or more expensive than the soap. if it were available locally itd be cheaper
i know, i have tabac, ToOBS, TGQ, Olivias, Proraso, TomsOfMaine,williams, QED, mountain country,MamaBear and more.
My experience with different shaving soaps is slim, but for under 15 bucks you can get two pucks of Ogallala SS, shipped.
That's not expensive and the stuff is top notch. I use it every day. Canned cream/gel/foam goes for anywhere from 3 to 8 bucks, and lasts for let's say 15 shaves. I haven't even gone through 1/4 of my first Ogallala puck yet and I've been using it just about every day for 3 weeks.
Just wanted to show that there is at least one good inexpensive option.
The Body Shop maca root was my first real shave cream as well. It's great stuff if you have a store near you -- really easy to get to lather.Quote:

Hopefully you have one, if not both, of these stores near you. It's nice being able to pick up something immediately -- plus both products are pretty cheap and you can check their scent in-store.
If you want to stay pretty cheap and buy it local, but have an upgrade over the canned stuff you're used to, I've heard good things about Kiss My Face shave cream. If I'm not mistaken it can be applied without a brush and is supposed to be one of the better/best brushless creams. You can find it in the health section (near burt's bees type products) of some grocery stores, at a whole foods type store, and I believe even at some walmarts in the health/organic/natural beauty supply section, whatever they call it (again near burt's bees stuff, etc) which is near the other toiletries, but not in the shaving section.

Burt's Bees makes a shave kit, which you may be able to find in a drug store or big store like target or walmart. More common is probably the Van De Hagen set for $10 which I use, readily available at all drug stores and walmart.
+1 on Kiss my face. never used their shave soap but their other soaps are great, so I'm assuming the shave soap will be too.
Just to reiterate so as to avoid confusion for him, the Kiss My Face I was referring to was the shave cream, not soap. I'm not sure they make a shave soap?Quote:

I used to use Gillette gel and also Barbasol...the gel works ok, as does the Barbasol. When I say ok, I mean for that type of product, not in terms of what most of us here come to expect.
If I may ask, why do you want to use a foam? If it's the price, I picked up my first real stuff for less than $15 bucks, and you'll enjoy the experience a lot more, probably.
I guess if you did want to use a foam over a soap or cream, I would suggest you still get a brush (Burmashave is only about $5) and apply the foam right into the brush and then on your face...You will get the exfoliating action, which will benefit your skin, and you'll get used to using a brush,so when you come to your senses and buy a soap :D you'll know how to use it
So, I'm a definite newbie here. However, I have an experience that may help you.
So, after my introductory post, I got an offer of some soap from one of the members. Seņor Ochobrazos sent me a tub of the Mama Bear's goodness.
I had the soap and brush before I had a straight. I had to shave for an event, and I tried the Mama Bear's soap with a Mock 3.
Night and Day! Really. So much more lubrication with good shave soap than I had experienced with the canned stuff. I got an excellent shave with the Mock 3.
Now that I have some straights, I won't be going back. Even if I did, I'd definitely stick with the soap and brush.
I have been thinking about giving shave soap and brushes as little presents to friends who have to shave. It really made a world of difference for me.
Me too. I have yet to do it though because I think when you start getting AD's when it comes to other people, you really need a shrink. When it comes time though in a couple of months, and my brother learns how to shave, I definitely will be getting him a brush and soap. I don't think a 14 year old needs/is responsible enough to maintain a straight. Though when it comes time...Quote:
