Help with new gear.

About a year ago I picked up an old C-Mon and a barber hone from a couple of antique stores and set about straight shaving. And a DOVO strop from the classicshaving website.

The best edge I could produce wasn't so great from the barber hone that I didn't lap. But I did get acceptable shaves. My interest sort of went to DE shaving. But that old C-Mon was there calling to me.

I restored her. A couple of spots of pitting that were easily sanded out. Some light rust and I polished up the scales. Now the problem is I can't re-pin it to save my life.

In the mean time I bought this razor ,that is shave ready.

So why am I telling you all of this? Because I need some advice.

I wanted a Tony Miller Strop, but he's unfortunately having some family issues and understandably is dealing with those and not making new strops.

I don't care for the DOVO and it'll be relegated to being a pasted strop.

I will buy from Tony Miller as soon as he begins production again. Can someone recommend a good strop to start me out?

What is a good paste for touch ups with my new (old) razor?

I like his horse/latigo/linen trifecta in a 2 1/2 or a 3". For paste I like the 0.5 diamond spray from SRD. Chrom ox is good too but not as good as the diamond spray IME.

I'll look up the .5 spray for touch ups. I should have listened to the advice of everyone and started with a well honed razor to start with. I am looking at the trusty old norton combo hone as well.

Please check the SRP classifieds and one of us will get that C-Mon set up for you. +1 with what Jimmy has said.

What don't you like about the Dovo (which one do you have?)? A red latigo strop would be a good all-arounder. Never tried SRD's version but lots of folks here are happy with it. If you want something with a lighter draw, horsehide or the SRD Premium I would be what I would try. The latter is the SRD strop I do have, and I am very happy with it.

+1 on the SRD Premium. The draw is perfect for my hand. That is my go to strop now with the webbed fabric.

I don't like the DOVO because it's too narrow for one thing. And what is SRD, by the way? I'm not familiar with the initials. Excuse my noobness.

if you want an inexpensive strop to hold you over until Tony is manufacturing again, get the Filly from KenRup. It's like 20 bucks shipped. I have one and it served me well for months. I'll be pasting it since I upgraded to his paladin, but this is still a great strop for the money.

I have several strop but if I was looking for one to get for a cheap replacement until I could get another one, I would think of picking up this strop
Jemico DOVO German Razor Strop 13" Rindleder Leather Single Sided


18 dollars was good right out of the box.
Its also small and I use it as my traveling strop.
I also got a nice red strop
Jemico DOVO German Razor Strop 23" Long Red Russian Leather with Handle


24 dollars however this strop took quite a bit of breaking in to get it to work well, you may have better luck. I am happy with it now though for 42 dollars was not bad.
I would recommend getting a less expensive strop for the first year anyway life is hard for a strop when people are learning how to use on:boohoo:
