New Dovo ‘Bergischer Löwe’ razor catching on scales.

Hi Guys,

I'm a proper newbie to straight razors. I decided that I would buy myself a couple of nice razors to get started with. One is the Dovo Bismarch and the other is the Dovo ‘Bergischer Löwe’, bought from a UK website specialising in Dovo razors.

When inspecting my Bergischer Löwe I've notice that the last cm of the blade when closing it just catches slightly on the scales unless you keep a little pressure on it to guide the blade inbetween the scales.

The Bimarch doesn't need this type of care and slides very nicely "home".

I was wondering if any of you had some advise on this. I've emailed the gent I purchased the razor off and am awaiting a reply...

Welcome to SRP. There are a number of reasons why the razor may close off center. Sometimes simply tapping on the pivot pin in the correct direction will solve the problem but you have to know what you're doing. See it the seller won't stand behind it and fix the problem or exchange it if you've not used it.

Huge +1 with the Jimmy Man here...
The correction is normally very very easy to do if you have done it before... One errant tap and they go CRACK really fast though....

If you decide to peen the pin. Follow the advice that glen had in the NC videos.

Put your thumb on the anvil/hammer/whatever. Now tap on your thumb with the same stroke/pressure you use when peening a pin.

If it hurts, your hitting too hard.

I have the Bergischer Lowe and love it! Great purchase on your part. However, it seems like a tight space for the razor to fold into because of how the scales are put together, so it needs to be right on, as you now realize, to "hit home" perfectly.

Probably either a production defect or the scales have warped a bit. personally, I say if you bought it new I would send it back because if you try and correct it and those horn scales crack they'll blame you and then you'll be in a pickle.

Thanks for all your responses. I really liked Jimmy's response on how to fix the problem, but I didn't really want to try this on a brand new razor, not knowing what I was doing.

I did send the razor back and Steve at www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk was absolutely brilliant. Replaced the razor and refunded me my postage costs too. Checked the razor out and I'm sure he gave it a quick once over on a hone as it passes the HHT and most importantly doesn't catch on the scales.
