Some guys get good results with the Chinese 12k but my choice would be the Naniwa. Matter of fact I have both and my choice is the Naniwa. :)
Do you already have 4k/8k stones? Are you very experienced honing or just starting out?
The reason I ask is from what I have read (and what I currently own), you might be better served - just seeing what you get for shave ready off the 8k to polishing compound or 8k to linen to strop. The higher stones will be more beneficial and you might have a better idea what you really want after you have worked this sharpening style for a bit.
just curious

Check out the Reviews section. There are reviews of both the Chinese 12k and the Naniwa. FWIW, I use the Chinese 12k. It works well for me and you can't beat the price. However, with the exception of a couple of old barber hones, it's the only polishing stone I have, so I really can't provide an objective recommendation.

i have a norton kit on the way to me now. it has a 4-8k stone but nothing higher. i'm new to honing also. thanks
I have both. I prefer the Naniwa, but the Chinese 12k has served me well in the past. It works better with a slurry, and is less expensive. You can get a chinese 12k for very little money. It would be for finishing only or touch ups. 100 laps is the norm, and 50 laps with a slurry. I think when everyone starts honing they pick up a C12k and set of Nortons.
