I made a razor rack to store the razors I'm using:
Seven Day Razor Rack « Keen Edge
After use I rinse, wipe clean with a tissue, strop 25 times on linen, coat with mineral oil and leave them open overnight. I don't have any little kids running around to worry about though.
what exactally does the linen do? Just fine up the edge a bit? Can you get that at a leather store?
Oh, ok. Dangit. I didn't know that. I was going to make a strop because I have some latigo laying around. I didn't know I needed the cloth/linen part. :(
Strop and lay on a barber's box in a closet high enough that my kids can't reach.
I don't know if you *need* the cloth side. From what I understand the purpose/usefulness of the cloth side is somewhat debatable, and there are differing opinions of course. :) I just use the cloth side because it's there and I think it makes sense to clean the edge with it, and I know other people more experienced than I do it that way. I'm sure there are those who never use the cloth strop. I was just giving you my routine, which is just one way. In a year I may have a different set of steps I follow. :)
Depending on what the backside of the leather you'll be using looks like, you could possibly clean your blade on the backside. Or you could make a cloth strop if you really wanted to.
Here's a thread on that very subject:

Wipe it dry, close it up, put in my leather case, zip the case close. This has worked for me for years.
Keen, you've been the man today!!!! I appreciate it!!! My strop might not be the prettiest leather strop but it'll do until I can actually go out and buy hardware and stuff. Now I'll have to start on a jean strop!!!
I dry with a towel and strop on horsehide after use. 4 razors are kept in a rack in the shave den while the others are kept behind glass in the workshop / office. My razors have been polished with MAAS before honing. It has a rust inhibitor in it and usually a dry terry cloth towel is all it takes to keep them shining.
I normally have 7 - 9 out at a time in rotation. After I use one, the blade is rinsed, wiped dry and left open on the counter while I finish getting ready. Those razors sit on a piece of marble on the counter in my Bathroom area, (Shave den) or whatever you want to call it. It's a rather large room. The shower and restroom are seperate. I used to keep camelia oil on the ones in rotation, but it turned out to be a waste. I just wound up wiping it back off when I got to that razor. Humidity is not an issue. Razor's not in rotation have a light coating of Camelia oil on the blade. They are stored in their respective boxes or Barber's box in a walk in closet which has become a shave den.
I apply baby oil with a q-tip, then it goes on my brush-razor stand
After being in a rush one evening, I put my razor away thinking it was completely dry. Well the next day spots of rust appeared on it, needless to say I now use food grade mineral oil on it, after shaving and stropping. It then goes back in its case outside the bathroom.
After shaving i rinse my blade in hot water, wipe it dry and leave it open all day while im at work. When i get home from work i put a very light coating of baby oil on it, close it up and but it in its box (if i have one). Then i pull my razor out i plan on using the next day, and start the process all over again.
I also do 15 passes on linen/latigo right after wiping the blade off.
Interesting question, since my wife just handed me an odd item... A "flower frog" she called it. So, for now, for $3.50 I'm putting my razors in a device made to hold flowers, and submerged in water.
Before putting them there, after a shave... clean and dry and coat with mineral oil.
I have a shelf in my closet that I leave my razors on. I clean and dry them after use, then leave them open overnight to dry. close them up in the am and repeat with the next one.
I store them in the very nice box GibII made me.:nj That is... after a light stropping on linen and then the leather.

I dry mine with toilet paper and apply a coating of silicone spray and store them in a drawer. Easy, practical and safe.
This is good to know. I just got a nice piece of wood I finished with teak oil. I plan on making a version of the 7 day razor rack with a brush holder on it.
I dry it, put it in the case it came in and set it on top of the coticule I use to sharpen it and that sits on top of my mug. No problems. Storing the razor with the coticule helps me avoid the sin of letting the edge get dull.

--Just built this. Real simple.
My vanity has a cupboard that rest on the counter and I keep my razors on the top shelf with a silica pack between them. It came in a bottle of OTC pain reliever. After finishing with the shave, I put a drop of peppermint oil on each side of the blade and use my finger to coat all metal surfaces including the tang and monkey's tail and spine. I also use the same finger to add a light coating to the metal scale end covers.
I have applied a drop of peppermint oil on my cartridge razor for years. Believe it or not, a drop each day spread over the blades helps them stay sharp twice as long. Peppermint oil prevents oxidation and has a mild antiseptic property. It also smells nice. Warning, peppermint oil is expensive, but last a long time using so little.
Apply WD-40 3-in-1 multi purpose oil or camellia oil
Place them back in their respective coffin box and others I place in brush stand.

Rinse in hot water. Dry. Leave until I've finished all the after-shave business. Strop on linen. Leave overnight on silica gel packets. Store in box with silica gel packets. So far, so good. Rotation's getting bigger though, maybe have to think harder and include oil.
I sometimes strop lightly after wiping the blade dry, apply a thin coat of oil, and store them in a canvas roll that was made by vgod, one of the members here on SRP. I keep the roll in a different room to avoid any possibility of contact with moisture and high humidity.
I've been wiping it down with japanese sword wiping paper (although I'm running out!) and them wiping it down with some felt soaked in choji (camellia oil or mineral with a bit of clove) and putting it on my mantle. I figure its better for it than storing it in the bathroom and I do my stropping by attaching to my fireplace damper rod.
I might get some sort of display stand in the future... My only razor is ebony, and I figure a pair of ebony/bone or vintage ivory would be nice together.
I'll get shot for this, but the ones not in rotation are simple in vintage cardboard razor sleeves (coffins?) The ones in rotation are in a mug on my dresser, the ones needing work are just lying around my room (dresser, desk, speaker cab) and the one that has just been used is lying open on the dress next to the mug. After shave, I'm usually wearing a towel, so I just wipe off on the towel, strop a few times on my arm, schlep my gear back to my room, strop a few times on linen (or if I put jeans on, on my thigh, really just strop on anything convex/flat and cotton) and leave it open next to the rotation mug.
I always keep my razors up high. I have small kids running around all the time. I also always strop a few laps after my shave. The one main thing i can tell you is DRY your razor. Water is BAD.
Clean it thoroughly, then let it air out for another 24 hours, then pack it in its case and store it high out of reach for children.
I use a towel to get all the soap scum off of it. During this process, I am very careful about the edge as I don't want to harm it. Then polish it up a bit with TP. Then sharpen it up again with my touch test for sharpness. I do this very lightly.
All of my straights work great and are finely tuned!
Pabster
After the shave, I rinse the blade under hot water and towel dry; I then use a q-tip and mineral oil and paint the blade with it. I do this after every shave. It might be over-kill but I want to protect the SR since I live in Florida and humindity is high here. :boohoo:
I rinse under the hot tap, wipe clean with a cotton face cloth, then do my post shave tidy up, I then clean and dry thoroughly with toilet tissue, and place it slightly open in my now clean and very dry (I make sure) shave mug, in the spare bedroom/office on a shelf next to where my strops hang, I keep my Razors and strops away from the bathroom because I dont believe the humidity is good for them, everything I use in my routine is in the bathroom cabinet, i.e soap/cream, alum block, after shave balm, cologne etc, with the exception of my brush, that sits bristle down in a nice brush stand.
I have oiled the blades before now, but find it a waste of time, and the pivot on 1 of my razors gets too loose if oil gets in there, and a str8 spinning in the scales is not something I like to worry about :nono:
