Hi I'm a complete N00B

OK so a friend of mine recomended Straight Razor so I figured I'd give it a try
so I invested in a starter kit. And seeing as I was recomended to avoid shaving with a razor like that before I could shave a peach without cutting the skin. So I did that.

But I guess I'm a little nervous, seems I don't get as close a shave with this razor as I thought I would.. Now I know the blade is sharp, cause I make sure of that. I'm just looking for tips on how to get that close smooth shave with this tool.

I hope someone has some good tips for me on how to get that close smooth shave, sort of a user guide from start to finish.

Welcome to SRP. Follow this link here to the SRP Wiki Beginner's Guide. In the Wiki you'll find tutorials and videos that will start you off on the right path. It is best to have a razor that is professionally honed. You say you know it is sharp so I assume that a honemiester honed it ? If not you will find that service offered in member services in the classifieds here.:gl:

Well, you came to the right place. Please go to the wiki on this site and check out the beginner's guide.

It may take some time to get your technique right, but once you do, you'll be well rewarded.

Hi and welcome to SRP. Much of the basic info can be found in the stickies at the top of the Newbie forum. After that, I would suggest that you take a look at the Wiki . One question that I am certain will be asked of you is whether or not your razor has been properly honed. A razor can seem extremely sharp and yet still not be truly "shave ready". The only good way for a new guy to be sure is to either buy it pre-honed or have it honed by someone that knows what they are doing.

Good luck, and keep posting as you work on your technique.

Edit: Man, I've got to work on my posting speed. Four guys beat me with basically the same info.

hi and welcome,
looks like you are getting started great. one thing that i might add is too take it slow and do not rush the process. it takes time to learn proper shaving skills, like stretching the skin and proper prep. do not get discouraged if you have a couple of setbacks. do not give up and you will find this will be you of the most enjoyable things in life. you will start to look forward to shaving instead of thinking it a chore...good luck:tu

I am also a Newb, have been straight shaving for about 2 weeks and improving with every shave. After you read the Wiki and have watched some of the videos, I recommend spending some time reading the threads. You will pick up quite a bit of information from others that may be having similar issues.

This is more fun than shaving in any other manner.

Welcome to SRP. As everyone else sent you to the WIKI I won't repeat it, but it is the place to start. 59Caddy is correct in saying to take it slow. As a newbie, if you still have ears and a nose you're doing fine. Straight razors are precision tools that rely on the user's skills to perform well. This takes time to develop so be patient. Prep your beard properly with a hot shower or long hot face wash. Use good shave cream or soap. Be aware of your blade angle at all times and know where the tip of the blade is every moment. The blade may be ~ 3 inches long but that doesn't mean that the entire length is cutting hair. Practice, take your time and maybe more your shave time to the evening for a while so you are not rushed and can concentrate on your shave.

I'm still pretty new to straight razor shaving (less than 2 months) and my first few shaves were the worst shaves I had in my life. Including the worst razor burn I've ever had the first five days of shaving. The shaves are improving and when I have time on the weekends I practice my technique these past two weeks I've been able to get a BBS with five passes (weekends) and a DFS with two passes during the week. I have to shave every day because of my profession so if I can do it and I don't consider myself particularly coordinated or above average you can do it too!

I'll bite, i'm not very keen on the lingo, but what is DFS? I'm racking my brain here, but can't seem to come up with a cool abbreviation.

Thank you guys for all your help. I'll deffinately have more questions soon.
Thinking of buying an alum block and some shaving oil when I order more shaving stuff. Seems I'll need it.

After reading the tips on lathering and on shaving techniques in the wiki, in adition to the tips and pointers you guys gave me.

I look forward to a long time on this forum, and I hope in time that I might be able to help out :D
