Question about oil and after shave care

I'm a bit confused and was wondering if someone could give clear this up for me: If you are shaving regularly do you always/often oil the blade after each shave? Or if you are taking a break from using the razor say for a week or a month and putting it away is that when to use the oil? Can the whole blade just be gently placed into a container of mineral oil to prevent the rust and then wiped off before use? Or is it bad (not just unusual) to store the blade in oil? Appreciate any help on this one.

You're going to get a whole array of answers on this one.I oil my blades after each use.I also store them in the bathroom inside a display case.Moisture from the shower has to be taken into consideration.If you can store them away from the moisture,you can avoid oiling,but you must be sure you have dried thoroughly,even down into the pivot area.I use a spray camellia oil which is easy to use and is very light and effective.Of course,if your blades are stainless,there is less cause for concern.I oil them anyway,just to be sure.

Some guys oil their razor after every use. Whether you need to or not is open for discussion, but it certainly doesn't hurt. I usually don't oil my razors unless they are going to sit for a while. The ones in the normal rotation just get carefully dried and put away in a wooden chest in the bedroom. If I kept my razors in the bathroom I would probably consider oiling after use.

If you decide to go with regular applications of oil I think that dipping in mineral oil will be, if nothing else, too messy. You only need to lightly coat the metal. A better solution would be to get some Camellia oil and just give your blade a light application (wipe off the excess with a tissue). I think Straight Razor Designs sells Camellia oil, but check their site to be sure.

Just get some quality oil like sterol or tuff glide or any one of a buch of others including mineral oil. personally I oil my razors every day but then I rotate and don't use the same razor again for about a month. For using the same blade every day or every other you probably don't have to oil as long as the razors aren't stored in a bathroom or you don't live in a very humid area. With carbon steel blades rust will actually begin to form within minutes of use but that's on a microscopic scale and stropping will clean that off.

I live in SoCal and have stored my razor in the bathroom drawer for about a year. No problems yet. *shrug*

I am starting to oil mine between uses. Anyone know if the type of oil matters? I use a jojoba oil for my aftershave treatment, and I am putting some on my blade as well since I can find it pretty cheap.

I think it's up to personal preferences, just don't let the blade to get rust
