I'm 15 and my father and I have been wanting to get into straight razor shaving for a while now. The only reason I think I should wait is because I have a fair amount of acne and I think that a straight razor would just slice me up. Does anybody have any experience with pimples and straight razors? If so then I would love to know if the effects are as negative as I am hoping they aren't.
I'm 20, and I have to say that a full hollow with a nice light touch is actually easier on acne than a DE razor.
And there is also one more thing: it might help, cause a normal cartridge razor after a few uses is like dragging your face along the floor of the shower, it is all kinds of old gunk in it, but a str8 is clean every time.
I had a bit of acne and it got better when I started shaving with a str8
At 59 years old, I still remember the nightmare of acne as an adolescent. Even with the tiny safety razor I used back then, I would make hamburg of my face on a regular basis. With a four or inch straight blade, I can't imagine the damage I would have done. My advice would be wait until you're a little older and it's cleared up a bit. It can be hazardous enough learning to use a straight for the first time, without the added obstacle of acne.
Straight shaving helps alleviate extra irritation (with proper technique) which can promote acne flair ups. I would say go for it as long as you keep a light touch.
I will also +1 the advice on straight shaving with acne. The blade will actually exfoliate your face a little bit too. It is so much better then using a disposable with acne.
thanks guys. it really helped to get all the input. I'm currently on acutain which is the strongest acne med in the market. So i should be well cleared up by christmas :) I think I'm gunna get my first straight this christmas. How expensive would your average one be anyways?
Well prices are all over the place, but I'd say the least expensive option would be to look in the classifieds. I usually see a razor or two for around $40 in there, and sometimes a little bit cheaper. What you're going to want is to make sure it's shave-ready.Quote:

I travel through Peru this summer and I came back with a rough and greasy (it was worse than oily) skin. That is when I started shaving with a straight and my skin got better. I shaved a little more every day until I could shave the whole beard. Now my skin is smooth and I owe it all to straight shaving. Not only is the rsaor is always clean, but you use quality soaps or cream to lather and an appropriate after-shave for your skin type.

SR shaving will definitely work for you. I used to have the ocassional pimples for ages until I started this shaving method as it exfoliates and is less irritating than the usual (and boring) mutli-blade cartridges. One other thing that probably helped me out is the after shave balm that I use which is sold by Crabtree and Evelyn which 100% natural (supposedly).
I have a question though: what is the "december contest"????? (I joined by june this year)
