You could but once you figure out how to make your own lather you wont go back. Even if you go back to the latest MACH 53.7 you wont go back as it really improves a shave. Besides which, once you have the hang of making lather it will take no more than about 30 seconds to make.
id have to say no as most normal soaps and shampoos work better
there not neccesarely good but better atleast
assuming you want to shave now and dont have shaving soap/cream
Welcome to SRP.
The short answer is that even bad lather is better than no lather. That said, we have put together some alternative pieces of equipment in this article: Buying a beginner's set on a budget - Straight Razor Place Wiki. You might find it useful.
Good luck, and keep us posted,
Robin
Is this because of financial reasons? I'm struggling to think why you would have no other choice but to use the canned goo.
For many years I used a shaving brush I picked up at Hoffritz for Cutlery and a bar of Dove bath soap. I also used the Barbasol, Gillette Gel .... the green stuff... and they all help but there is nothing like a quality shaving soap or cream to make for a superlative shave.
Sure you can.
A brush and soap is about eight bucks from walmart from what I understand, so it would certainly be worth saving the pennies for a while if cash is the issue.
Sure, why not? There are lots of reasons to go with a shave soap, cream or even shave stick, but the canned stuff will work well enough to get a shave (if that's all you have).
Ive used soap and brush with a cartridge razor before I discovered the Str8, but never canned shaving cream with a Str8. I dont see why there would be no other choice though. If you stick with the Str8, which you will, you will come to realise that nothing beats a quality soap or cream and continue your quest to source the best. I still am.
In a real pinch if your back is against the wall you could shave with cold water and nothing else. It really does work.
In a real pinch you could go a step further and shave with nothing at all...except a razor!
Im sure that would work too.
For a couple of bucks, you can get basic shave soap and a brush @ Walgreens, Wal-Mart, CVS and etc. If you want to use the canned goo do some extra beard prep, hot water, hot towels, something to soften the beard.
I thought he was referring to time not money.
What I was trying to say is, could I use the "canned goo" if I were to ever run out of the "good stuff". It was never a question of money or time. Just a matter of packages getting to my house in time for my next shave. Thanks for all of advice.
best advice, never ever, never run out of the good stuff:rant::w
Yep even if you are a big spender there is no reason to go broke.
Start with a clean wet face and you are half way there.
I have to say that the goo in the can sells because it works for a
lot of people. I might add that a lot of folk have no clue about what is
good. As underwhelming as the goo is it is still better than a dry shave.
Some of the goo in a can works OK on a clean wet face
when worked to a lather with a man bristle brush and paw.
Or you know, Bar soap... like pretty much everyone did for about a century. Not great for your skin, but it works.
My Barber after a hair cut, shaves your neck with a shavette. He uses the canned shaving cream. I noticed he sprays a moderate amount on his fingertips of one hand, and then runs hot water over it and makes a small amount of lather using his other hands finger tips. He then applies the thinner(and less fluffy) lather by hand. Not as good as quality shave soap but will work in a pinch.
you may also do like i do and make your own shaving soap. it is fairly inexpensive and you can make a variety of scents and styles of soap. for a few dollars you can make up enough to last for a long, long time.
I have tried different things and found that body wash like you use in the shower works well and is better than a bar of soap since it leavs your skin better. It makes a nice lather. I used Suave brand and it smells very manly. ( Love the smell) . I hate the canned stuff. It is so thick and puffy you can't see where you are at and it doesn't wet the whiskers worth a -------p Mack
Well, not all canned goo is bad: http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...have-foam.html. ;)
